Biskupová – Radošinka, Loess Hills and Local History

History and Culture

The origins of Biskupová date back to the 13th century. The village was first documented in 1326 under the name Villa Domini Episcopi Nitriensis. The historical names Pispeky from 1440, Wiskupowa from 1773, Biskupowa from 1786, as well as the Hungarian name Püspökfalu, are also recorded for Biskupová. Biskupová belonged to the Diocese of Nitra and was later administered by the Radošina estate. Turkish troops completely burned down Biskupová in 1599. The so-called Hlohov dialect is still spoken in the village today. Biskupová is home to the Church of St. Michael the Archangel. A mastodon mandible from the Biskupová excavation site was recovered in 1962.

Landscape and Agriculture

The Radošinka River is 31.59 km long and flows through Biskupová. Biskupová retained its agricultural character during the First Czechoslovak Republic. Cereal crops held an important place in plant production, especially rye, wheat, oats and barley; these are still cultivated today.

Transport

Another historical trace of the village is the Zbehy–Radošina railway line. It runs through the hilly landscape of the Nitrianska hills and follows the course of the Radošinka.
