Pavlová: Holiday Apartment between the Hron and the Hills

Pavlová lies on the left bank of the Hron at the foot of the Ipeľská pahorkatina hills. The eastern part of the village is situated on the deforested ridges of the hills, which are dissected by deep erosion gullies. In the western cadastral area, 200 hectares of the wet Hron floodplain belong to Pavlová. The riverbank, hills and floodplain landscape therefore shape the geographical character of the village.

Nature

In Pavlová, the Hron runs along the left bank, while the wet Hron floodplain lies in the western part of the cadastral area. Pavlová lies at the foot of the Ipeľská pahorkatina hills.

Culture

The history of Pavlová reaches back archaeologically to the Stone Age: the village contains evidence of settlement dating from that period. An archaeological cemetery dating from the arrival of the Hungarians has also been excavated. An entry from 1135 documents a mill in Pavlová on the lower Hron, which was owned by Bzovík Monastery.

The history of the Church of Saint Lawrence is also closely connected with the village. The first Church of Saint Lawrence in Pavlová dated from 1717. A new stone Church of Saint Lawrence was built on its site between 1884 and 1888. This church was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in the 1960s with financial support from the residents.

Pavlová belongs to an ethnographic group of six municipalities associated with a so-called women’s costume with a short skirt. The origin of this costume is dated to the period of Ottoman rule. Its preservation and occasional presentation are an important element of Pavlová’s local national culture.

Cultural life also includes events in the municipal park and on the stage, where concerts, puppet theatre performances and plays take place. The Szikince Festival is an established event organised together with other municipalities on the banks of the Perec River. A folk ensemble has existed in Pavlová since 2008; its performances enrich Pavlová’s municipal events.
