Holiday apartment in Dolný Ohaj: Culture, cycling routes and wine tradition
Dolný Ohaj combines sacred culture, archaeological traces, regional festivals and cycling routes with a wine tradition that remains present to this day. The town therefore offers a variety of points of interest: memorial sites and churches, short and longer cycling routes, events featuring music and customs, as well as evidence from several historical periods.
Culture
A memorial plaque dedicated to the national politician Juraj Holček is located at the rectory. He served at this rectory from 1848 to 1865. Another special place is the Chapel of Blessed Sister Zdenka in Dolný Ohaj. It is considered the first chapel in Slovakia dedicated to Sister Zdenka and houses her relics.
The Church of St. Imrich was built in the Neoclassical style between 1872 and 1876 on the site of a Gothic church that had been destroyed in 1708. Inside, it features an altarpiece from 1928 by T. Ozoray of Nitra. There is also a Baroque wooden baptismal font from the mid-18th century.
Dolný Ohaj's older settlement history is also evident in archaeological finds. The town contains a Neolithic settlement of the Želiezovce culture. In addition, a grave find containing fluted pottery from the Eneolithic period, associated with the Baden culture, was discovered. Archaeological graves also attest to a Slavic settlement and a burial site from the Great Moravian and post-Great Moravian periods.
Cycling Routes and Nature
For shorter rides, cycling route no. 5103 Okruh Dolný Ohaj is available. It is classified as an easy green recreational route, measures 2.1 kilometres and has an elevation gain of 13 metres. It is 55.6 kilometres long in total, includes 669 metres of elevation gain and runs through ten municipalities. Along the Okruh Dolný Ohaj cycling route, the local church and the Calvary complex are among the sights.
Traditions
The choir Juraj Holček is part of the local cultural life. It performs traditional songs from the region, Slovak folk songs and Christian songs. Its performances take place at municipal events as well as at regional, national and church events.
The events calendar includes religious, musical and local traditions. On 23 May 2026, Púť na vinohrady included a pilgrimage on foot to the Dolnoohajské vineyards. This walking pilgrimage was followed by a Mass at the statue of Saint Urban in the Dolnoohajské vineyards. The 13th edition of the Ohajský Kenderáš music festival took place in Dolný Ohaj on 18 July 2026.
The celebrations on the eve of 1 May include decorating and erecting a maypole in front of the cultural centre, as well as singing together with the Juraj Holček choir. At Ohajské fašiangy, a village pig slaughter was demonstrated, and local slaughter specialities and wine from Dolný Ohaj were tasted. Traditional wine production is part of Dolný Ohaj's local character.
Ohajský Kenderáš featured children's bouncy castles and water football. Thus, alongside music, customs and religious events, the town also offers a programme item with these explicitly mentioned activities.
