Mužla lies in the Danube Lowland on the southern edge of the Hron Upland. The Danube borders the village to the south, while the Belianske kopce hills lie to the north. Between this landscape and the local winemaking tradition, a clear picture of the village emerges: winemaking in Mužla has a tradition dating back around 400 years.

Nature

Several protected natural areas lie within the cadastral territory of Mužla. Jurský Chlm is a protected natural area within the cadastral territory, as is the Čenkovská step. The protected area of Čenkov comprises the national nature reserves Čenkovská step and Čenkovská lesostep.

Jurský Chlm lies in the surrounding area west of Mužla. In this nearby area, the site features loess and sand walls with nesting sites for European bee-eaters. Čenkovská lesostep consists of gently undulating terrain with sand dunes reaching a relative height of 2 to 3 metres. It is also notable for being home to Slovakia’s only occurrence of the priority habitat “Pannonian poplar woods with juniper”.

Culture

A preserved bell tower stands in the cemetery of Mužla. It is the remains of the Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier, built in 1738; the municipality of Mužla had the bell tower reconstructed in 2016. A wooden kopjafa memorial in the centre also commemorates the history of the village. It was erected in 2000 to mark the 850th anniversary of the municipality’s first written mention in 1156, under the name Musla.

The Classicist Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary adds to this historical picture. Construction began at the start of the 18th century, and the church was completed in 1817. After a fire in 1862, the church was restored. The Via Crucis – Via Lucis Stations of the Cross comprises 14 stations: each depicts scenes from the Way of the Cross on one side and scenes from the Way of the Resurrection on the other.

History

The Mužla-Čenkov archaeological site is a multi-period site. Evidence has been found of settlement ranging from the culture of the later Linear Pottery culture through the Želiezovce Group, the Baden culture, the Kosihy-Čaka Group, Bronze Age and other prehistoric cultures, to the La Tène period and the Early Middle Ages from the 9th to the 12th century.

This archaeological site also includes an Early Medieval settlement on the left bank of the Danube, enclosed by a rampart.

Wine and Festivals

The winemaking tradition is also reflected in local events. At the traditional grape harvest festival in Mužla, the “Rychtár” and “Rychtárová” appear every year at the end of August in Mužla’s traditional costumes. The 25th grape harvest festival took place in Mužla on 31 August 2024. The tradition of the local wine competition and wine tasting has existed since 1988; the 34th local wine competition with tasting took place in March 2023.

The Mužlianska vínna túra is another documented wine event in the village. The VII Mužlianska vínna túra took place on 24 May 2025. During the Mužlianska vínna túra 2025, more than 15 local winemakers opened their cellars for tastings. Vino Mužla organises wine tastings, generally by personal arrangement. Tasting packages with four, six or eight wines are available, accompanied by pastries, cheese or a cold platter.

Cycling tourism is also associated with Mužla: a section of the EuroVelo 6 cycle route passes beneath Mužla’s vineyard.
