Šurany combines an impressive cultural history with places where the city’s past can be traced into the present day. At the center is the Orthodox synagogue, a national cultural monument dating from 1916. Its eclectic architecture combines Moorish, Art Nouveau and Byzantine elements, making the building a distinctive testament to the city’s history.

Culture

Following the reconstruction of its interior, the synagogue was opened to the public in May 2005. Today, it hosts museum and gallery exhibitions, concerts, lectures and presentations. The permanent exhibition of the Šurany City Museum is located on the upper floor. It presents the history of the city and its districts of Nitriansky Hrádok and Kostolný Sek, from prehistoric times through the 20th century.

The exhibits include archaeological finds from Zámeček, the “Slovak Troy”, in Nitriansky Hrádok. Finds from the site of Šurany Castle are also on display. A working clock mechanism is a special feature of the city museum: a tower clock dating from 1887 that came from the Šurany church. In this way, the museum rooms bring together archaeological evidence and a preserved piece of technology from the city’s more recent history.

The parish church of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr is also one of Šurany’s notable buildings. It has basilica-style architecture and features the largest stained-glass altar window in Slovakia. The Marian Plague Column with its statue of the Immaculate Virgin commemorates the plague epidemic of 1709–1710.

History

The archaeological site of Zámeček in the district of Nitriansky Hrádok plays a central role in the history of the area. It is one of the region’s most significant historical sites, with importance extending beyond the city limits. The city of Šurany expressly invites those interested to visit the archaeological site in person.

The monument to the Hrádocká Venuša also stands on Zámeček Hill in Nitriansky Hrádok. Nitriansky Hrádok has grown together with the city of Šurany. The monument was erected in 1997 and is a large replica of the Neolithic Hrádocká Venuša. The main information board at the archaeological site has been renewed. A new signpost at the bridge on Topoľová Street was intended to improve orientation and access to the site.

Recreation

The TONA recreational area serves residents of Šurany and the surrounding area, offering opportunities for relaxation and leisure activities. TONA also provides fishing-related services and hosts cultural, social and entertainment events. Alongside the historic sites, this provides a dedicated place for leisure activities and events within the city.
