Holiday apartment in Šarkan: castle, floodplains and wine-growing landscape

Šarkan combines a landscape shaped by floodplains, arable land and vineyards with prominent evidence of the village’s history. The municipality is located in the southeastern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina upland. In the northern part of its cadastral area, the marshy floodplains of the Paríž stream extend. The stream flows through the cadastral area of Šarkan and flows into the Hron. Extensive arable land, vineyards with wine cellars, grassland, as well as areas and linear elements of landscape greenery, surround the built-up area.

Landscape

The Parížske močiare area, located near Šarkan, is also part of the local landscape profile. The 590-hectare area is a protected area and is under the jurisdiction of the CHKO Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. Thus, humid floodplain areas, agriculturally used land and viticulture meet in the vicinity of the village, while the Paríž provides a link to the Hron river system.

Culture and history

Among the defining buildings is the Roman Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary in Šarkan, dating from 1810. The church in Šarkan is a subsidiary church of the Gbelce parish. The castle, built in 1827 by the Koller family, is also part of the village’s history. Its remains include a unique 19th-century wall. The fence on the eastern side of the castle is decorated with round towers.

Šarkan is also home to a late Baroque Pietà with a cross from the second half of the 18th century, registered as an immovable cultural monument. In the village district of Divá, an architecturally interesting wooden bell tower stands at the entrance to the village. The reconstructed and expanded estate in Šarkan was put into operation in 2014 under the name CHÂTEAU ŠARKAN. The estate contains a restaurant, a bar, a salon and a conference room.

Cycling

Šarkan is also situated along the route of a regional cycle path. Stage 5 runs from Štúrovo via Kamenica nad Hronom, Kamenín, Bruty, Svodín, Šarkan, Ľubá, Belá and Nána back to Štúrovo. The cycling stage is 65.4 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 335 metres. The listed cycling stage is not suitable for road bikes.

Local character

The connection between agriculture and viticulture is also reflected in the municipal coat of arms of Šarkan. It combines the motif of a grape with the municipality’s agricultural and, in particular, viticultural traditions. Ranč U divokého koňa offers another way to discover the rural surroundings: as part of agrotourism, horseback riding and carriage rides are offered there.
