Rastislavice: Churches, Nature and Regional History

Rastislavice combines sacred architectural history with a protected natural area and regional traditions. The Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception was created by converting an older granary. The boundary of the protected Dolné Považie Bird Protection Area (SKCHUV005) also runs through Rastislavice.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception is a single-nave functionalist building constructed between 1939 and 1941. The Evangelical church in Rastislavice was designed by Prague architect Václav Ložek. The two churches feature different architectural influences.

The municipal museum of Rastislavice was established in 2002 as a space dedicated to traditions. It presents the history of the municipality, folk customs and the culture of its inhabitants. The museum is currently temporarily closed while new premises for its operation are being sought. Its current status is therefore just as relevant to planning a visit as its historical and ethnographic content.

The local folklore group Rastislavická Konopa presents the folk traditions of Rastislavice. Stavanie Mája is a spring-related custom in Rastislavice. In Nové Rastislavice, there is also a renovated old swing well, the „vahadlová studňa“, whose original age is estimated at around 100 years.

Nature

At the western edge of the built-up area of Nové Rastislavice, the boundary of the protected Dolné Považie Bird Protection Area runs along the area. In the protected area, observations of the Syrian woodpecker (Dendrocopos syriacus) were recorded in Nové Rastislavice between 2011 and 2013.

Old, open acacia avenues along field roads near Nové Rastislavice are considered a preferred habitat of this species. The Šurianské slaniská Site of European Interest lies in the wider area of Rastislavice.

Getting Around

Nové Rastislavice bus stop is one of seven bus stops in the municipality of Rastislavice. Suburban bus routes connect Rastislavice with the surrounding villages and towns. Rastislavice currently has no rail transport infrastructure.

From Rastislavice, a blue-marked cycling route measuring 11.7 kilometres can be reached in the neighbouring municipality of Poľný Kesov.

History

Historically, dairy products of excellent quality were produced at Degešské majere. Cheese and butter from Degešské majere were sold as far as Budapest. The traditional sales destination of Budapest is therefore just as much part of the history of the products as their production at Degešské majere.
