Holiday apartment in Rožňava: Gothic architecture and mining history

Rožňava reveals its history not only through individual buildings, but also through the layout of its centre. The historic centre consists of a spacious square and several adjoining streets. The square is considered the largest of its kind in Slovakia. The present structure of the centre was established approximately towards the end of the 15th century.

Townscape and sacred architecture

Rožňava is one of the centres of the Gothic Route in Gemer. One of the defining buildings is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a medieval Gothic sacred building dating from the late 13th century, whose construction was completed in 1304. It is the oldest and most valuable cultural monument in Rožňava. Its interior also contains a panel painting considered the oldest depiction of mining on an altarpiece in Central Europe.

The cathedral therefore brings architectural history and mining history together in one place. The Gothic sacred building points to the Middle Ages, while the panel painting depicts a motif connected with Gemer’s economic past. Both aspects form part of the historical significance of this single site, without requiring visitors to visit different buildings.

Mining and Gemer

The mining history is directly connected with the region’s history at the Mining Museum in Rožňava. The museum is a regional-history district museum specialising in the mining and metallurgical industries of Gemer. It has five independent permanent exhibition units. These include exhibitions on the mining and metallurgical industries of Gemer, the age of steam, mining workplaces, and the nature of the Slovak Karst and the adjacent areas. The courtyard contains mining machinery and a mine railway.

The five units each focus on different aspects, without limiting the museum to a single era or a single area of work. Mining and the metallurgical industry are presented alongside the age of steam, specific mining workplaces and nature-related themes. The courtyard extends this structure into an outdoor area with mining machinery and a mine railway. Technology, the world of work and the nature of the Slovak Karst thus appear in separate, clearly named exhibition sections of the same museum.

Watchtower and Calvary

The watchtower of Rožňava is a Renaissance tower built between 1643 and 1654. From its gallery, visitors can see all the monuments of the historic centre, the Calvary, the town and the Rožňava Basin. You can visit the watchtower without a guide during the opening hours of the tourist information centre.

The gallery combines views of individual monuments with a wider perspective of the town and basin. The watchtower thus makes both the closely situated buildings of the historic centre and Rožňava’s spatial setting visible. Its Renaissance period complements the medieval character of the cathedral with another historical era.

The Calvary of Rožňava is one of the oldest Calvary complexes in Slovakia and is also the oldest monument of its kind in the Gemer region. The walk from the town hall of Rožňava at Miners’ Square to the Calvary of Rožňava is considered easy, is less than two kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 120 metres. The starting point, destination, length and elevation difference of this route are therefore clearly specified.
