Holiday apartment in Krásnohorské Podhradie: Culture and History

In Krásnohorské Podhradie, the Andrássy Mausoleum is located directly on the main road E58/E571 along the Rožňava–Košice route. Opposite it are a ticket booth and a small temporary parking area. The small sepulchral complex was built in 1903–1904 in the Art Nouveau and Neoclassical styles from white Carrara marble imported from Italy. The mausoleum, its material and its construction period therefore form a clearly defined architectural ensemble. The mausoleum serves as a publicly accessible museum and is part of the exhibition of the Slovak National Museum – Múzeum Betliar. Visitors can view the lavishly furnished interior and learn more about the lives of Dionýz and Františka Andrássy.

Culture

The Andrássyovská obrazáreň is a building constructed in 1908 in the Art Nouveau style. Its floor plan has the shape of a Greek cross. Since 1990, the Andrássyovská obrazáreň has once again served its original purpose as an art gallery. The year 1908 refers to the time of its construction, while its use since 1990 marks its return to its original function. A church in the municipality of Krásnohorské Podhradie is also mentioned as early as 1332–1337. Thus, the municipality contains an Art Nouveau building with a clear geometric form, an Andrássýovská obrazáreň once again used as a gallery, and an early reference to church history, while the gallery has resumed its original use.

History

Krásna Hôrka Castle originally arose as a medieval fortification. Its museum history began after 1857, when Count Juraj Andrássy established a family museum using preserved furnishings as well as weapons and armour. In 1867, the collections were made accessible to visitors. The first decisive steps in the museum’s history therefore took place between the establishment of the family museum and the opening of its collections to visitors. The years mark both the beginning of its use as a museum and the time when the collections became publicly accessible.

Visitor Information

Due to ongoing reconstruction, Krásna Hôrka Castle is currently closed to the public. This current status exists alongside its long construction and museum history and should be taken into account when visiting the site. The medieval fortification and the family museum established later therefore belong to the history of the castle, while its current visitor status is determined by the ongoing reconstruction.
