Holiday apartment in Dlhá Ves – Culture and Karst in the Slovak Karst

Dlhá Ves lies on the southwestern edge of the limestone Silická planina, in the enclosed Dlhoveská dolina valley and in the southern part of Slovak Karst National Park. In the village and its immediate surroundings, traces of rural culture combine with the karst landscape and marked trails; Domica Cave is also nearby.

Culture

The Evangelical church in Dlhá Ves was built in 1792, and its tower was added in 1840. Its furnishings include a Neoclassical altar dating from 1802. The church organ is a national cultural monument; it dates from 1795 and was created by Fr. Ed. Petznik.

The Vidiecky dom in Dlhá Ves is a cultural monument and an example of traditional rural architecture. It comprises three rooms: an entrance hall, a kitchen and a room. The furnishings include old furniture and objects from the former everyday life of the local population. The entrance hall displays objects that were used for fieldwork and working with domestic animals. The kitchen contains looms on which former residents made textiles. The collection continues to be expanded with objects, old documents and photographs of residents.

The traditional crafts of charcoal burning and glass painting have also been preserved in Dlhá Ves. Several traditional Gemer farmhouses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries have been preserved on the Silická planina. Cultural and community events are regularly held there.

Nature

The small karst lake Smradľavé jazierko, covering approximately 0.33 hectares, lies within the cadastral area of Dlhá Ves. Nearby is Domické škrapy, a national nature reserve since 1973 with thermophilous vegetation.

Domica Cave lies in the cadastral area of Kečovo, approximately 7 km from Dlhá Ves, and has been open to the public since 1932. The “Domica and Surroundings” educational trail has been located around the cave since 1985. Five information panels cover the Slovak Karst, Domica Cave, fauna and flora, geology and geomorphology, and agriculture.

Trails and the Year

A marked green hiking trail from Bretka, ending on the Silická planina, passes through the cadastral area of Dlhá Ves. The “Jaskyňa Domica – Silická planina” cycling route begins at the large car park by the church tower in the centre of Dlhá Ves and connects to the red cycling trail markings. Via Road 587, this route runs through Dlhá Ves to Domica Cave.

A secondary road to Domica Cave and the international Domica–Aggtelek border crossing into Hungary passes through Dlhá Ves. The border crossing is 3 km away. In addition to the park, the sports field is used year-round: in summer it is used for football and other games, while in winter it has been an ice rink since 1989. An ice carnival is held in Dlhá Ves every year.
