Čierna Lehota – Holiday Apartment and Mountain Trails to Stolica and Kohút

Čierna Lehota lies at the end of the Štítnicka Valley below the 1,476 m-high Stolica. From here, a blue-marked trail leads to the two highest peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains: Stolica at 1,476 m and Kohút at 1,409 m.

Nature

Zone A of the Stolica protected area includes parcels in the cadastral territory of Čierna Lehota. It runs along the boundary of the cadastral territory to Kohút and onward to Stolica. The 1,409 m-high Kohút dominates the valley in the background and closes off the municipal territory of Čierna Lehota as well as the entire valley. Carpathian stonecrop, an endemic species of the Carpathians, grows on Kohút.

The Muránska planina–Stolica protected area is also part of the natural setting of the locality; its cadastral territory includes Čierna Lehota. Forests cover around 88% of this protected area. Wolves, brown bears and Eurasian lynx occur regularly in the Stolica Natura 2000 site.

Hiking and recreational activities

A marked Stolica hiking route runs from Muránska Huta via Stolica and the Pomník SNP monument to Čierna Lehota and onward to Slavošovce. The Stolica route follows well-marked hiking trails. The trail to the Pomník SNP monument leads to Čierna Lehota and joins a blue-marked hiking trail there before the end of the village.

An ascent of Stolica is one of the municipality’s annual cultural and social events. The proximity of the Slovak Karst, Slovak Paradise and Muránska planina national parks creates opportunities for hiking and cycling from Čierna Lehota.

The cadastral territory of Čierna Lehota also belongs to the Muránska planina–Stolica protected area. Hiking, cycling, caving, climbing and hang gliding are listed as recreational activities for the area.

The described trails connect several marked sections with one another: the Stolica route reaches Čierna Lehota via the Pomník SNP monument, while the blue hiking trail joins it before the end of the village. Together with the annual ascent of Stolica, this creates a picture of a regional route, a local trail section and a recurring municipal event, without equating the individual routes or their names.

Culture and remembrance

Čierna Lehota’s war heritage includes a memorial room dedicated to the Slovak National Uprising. Above Čierna Lehota stands the Pomník SNP Čierna Lehota monument, commemorating the victims of the Slovak National Uprising.

Another cultural landmark is the Evangelical church of Čierna Lehota. It was built in 1773–1774 as a Toleration church in the Classicist style. Its furnishings include a wooden Protestant gallery extending along three sides of the nave. The church also has a Classicist altar from the mid-19th century with a painting of Christ giving a blessing.
