Those visiting Zuberec will encounter regional culture, a designated natural monument and mountain destinations with far-reaching views. The Múzeum oravskej dediny, the Brestovská jaskyňa and Mount Machy represent different themes and points of interest. Folklore, traditional crafts, a ride on the tourist narrow-gauge railway and the Roháče – Spálená ski resort are also specific attractions in and around the village.

Culture and traditional crafts

The Múzeum oravskej dediny presents more than 50 buildings of folk architecture. They are arranged in ensembles representing different parts of the Orava region. The museum includes, among other things, a water-powered mill, a Mangeľ for smoothing blue-print fabric, an oil mill and a pottery kiln. Furnished houses, traditional crops and domestic animals provide an impression of the former lives and work of the inhabitants of Orava.

The various parts of the museum therefore showcase not only buildings, but also technical and craft work areas. During the summer holidays, Remeslá na dedine offers demonstrations of various traditional crafts every Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00. The programme includes pottery, wood carving, wire art, woodturning and making candles from beeswax. The individual techniques illustrate how varied craft work within the region’s everyday culture can be.

The Podroháčske folklórne slávnosti take place every year on the first weekend of August in Brestová near Zuberec and are designed as a three-day international folklore festival.

Nature

The Brestovská jaskyňa is located in the cadastral area of Zuberec and is designated a national natural monument. It was the first cave in Orava and the Western Tatras to be opened to visitors.

Hiking

The Rozhľadňa Machy viewpoint stands on the 1,202-metre-high Mount Machy above Zuberec. From there, views extend across the Western Tatras, the Skorušinské vrchy and the municipality of Zuberec. The viewpoint connects the mountain’s name with three clearly identified directions of view and a direct link to the village.

Winter sports

The Roháče – Spálená ski resort is located in a mountain valley below Salatímni in Tatra National Park and is approximately 10 km from Zuberec.

Getting around

A ride on the Roháčsky turistický vláčik runs from Habovka via Zuberec, past the Brestovská jaskyňa and the Múzeum oravskej dediny, to Zverovka.
