Liesek: Nature, Cycling Route and Culture
The northern part of the cadastral territory of Liesek lies within the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area. The cadastral territory of Liesek belongs to the Horná Orava Natura 2000 site. This means that the spatial scope of protection extends from the northern part of the cadastral territory to the entire cadastral territory, although under two different protection categories.
These landscape features complement the other themes that characterize Liesek: a cross-border cycling route, its winter use and several cultural traces in the village. The result is not a uniform excursion profile, but a combination of landscape, activity, winter and history.
Cycling Route and Winter
The cycling route from Trstená via Liesek and Suchá Hora to Nowy Targ in Poland passes through Liesek. The village is therefore located along a route that connects a Slovak starting point with a Polish destination and places Liesek within a cross-border itinerary.
The cycling route has several rest areas with benches and seating. As part of the Cesta okolo Tatier project, guardrails were also installed along the cycling path in the area of Liesek. Rest areas and guardrails are therefore among the visible features of the route, while its course describes the connection between Trstená, Liesek, Suchá Hora and Nowy Targ.
The cycling route passing through Liesek is used for cross-country skiing in winter. Cycling and cross-country skiing represent two seasonally different uses of the same route: the route remains a point of reference for the area, while the sporting activity changes with the season. Those who view Liesek at different times of year will find a clear contrast in this combination between the summer cycling route and winter cross-country skiing.
Culture and History
The FS Skorušina folklore ensemble was founded in Liesek in December 1988. It specializes in Goral folklore from Hladovka and Suchá Hora. FS Skorušina and FS Oravský Spiežovec performed in the programme, presenting folk dances and folk songs. Its place of foundation, specialization and stage programme thus connect Liesek with a specifically identified regional folklore tradition.
Another cultural trace is the exhibition “A Glimpse into the Past of Liesek”, which opened in 2016. Together with the folk dances and folk songs, it presents two different forms of cultural interpretation: an exhibition offering a historical perspective and a programme that works through music and dance.
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was expanded between 1996 and 1998. It combines Baroque elements with modern functionalism. The church’s original side altars also came from Červený Kláštor. This building therefore brings together a documented period of expansion, two stylistic directions and the origin of the side altars in another place.
Liesek thus combines protected landscapes with a cycling route that is used for cross-country skiing in winter, as well as cultural offerings ranging from Goral folklore to local history.
