Holiday apartment in Podbiel – Culture, Nature and History
Podbiel is associated with several clearly distinct themes: local history, architectural heritage, technical monuments, cycling routes and landscape.
Culture
The Bobrova raľa folk architecture heritage reserve preserves traditional buildings characteristic of central Orava, arranged around farmyards. The complex is arranged around open communal courtyards: the farm buildings stand behind the houses, while the barns enclose the courtyards in an L-shaped layout. The outdoor areas of Bobrova raľa are accessible from the public space and can be visited individually at any time of day. The interiors remain inaccessible because they are privately owned.
The Small Ethnographic Museum in Podbiel is located in a renovated former building of the parish school, No. 194. It displays objects that were formerly used in Podbiel households, during agricultural work and in the liturgy. The museum also provides information about archaeological finds on Biela skala, the former Zuberec–Podbiel narrow-gauge railway and the industrial history of Podbiel.
Near Podbiel in Orava, Františkova huta is a national cultural monument and one of the most valuable technical monuments in Orava. The ruins preserve the remains of a factory hall, a blast furnace and several installations. These include a hammer mill, inlet and outlet channels, and a blowing chamber. Františkova huta is located 2 km from the centre of Podbiel; a visit to Františkova huta can be combined with a walk, and it is accessible by bus.
Nature
Biela skala reaches a height of 750 m. In good visibility, a telescope provides views across the mountains of Orava. A species-rich mountain flora grows on the plateau below its summit. At the same time, Biela skala preserves Hallstatt-period funerary pottery and an archaeological site with 43 urn graves.
Červená skala is used for easy walks and offers the best view of Podbiel; the Roháče can also be seen in the distance. The elevation is part of the Carpathian Klippen Belt and consists of limestone formed as deep-sea sediments during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, 195 to 65 million years ago. Fossilized imprints of ammonites can still be found near the information board below Červená skala.
Cycling
The challenging, red-marked cycling route through the Roháčska Valley begins in Podbiel at the junction with the road to the Roháče and is 27.5 km long. The blue circular route Podbiel–Zuberec–Oravice–Trstená–Podbiel, which is suitable for experienced cyclists, also starts at this junction. It is 52 km long.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Podbiel, the length of stay, room layout and self-catering options may each play a role. The desired level of independence in everyday life is also part of this choice. Such personal requirements can be defined independently of the amount of living space being considered for the trip.
