Tvrdošín: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Gothic All Saints wooden church of Tvrdošín dates from the first half of the 15th century, was awarded by Europa Nostra in 1994, and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. During the summer season of 2026, the All Saints Church will be open to the public daily from 10:00 to 16:00, except Mondays, from 1 May to 30 September; outside the season, visits are possible by appointment arranged at least one day in advance.

Culture and history

The Tvrdošín heritage zone includes Trinity Square and the adjoining historic urban fabric with the Gothic wooden church; the historic centre of Tvrdošín was declared a heritage zone on 1 June 1991.

The late Baroque Marian column stands in Trinity Square. It was created at the end of the 18th century in the workshop of the Belopotocký stonemason family from Oravský Biely Potok.

Tvrdošín Town Hall is considered the finest and best-preserved monument from the second half of the 19th century. It was built in 1872–1875 on older foundations dating from the 18th century.

The Márie Medveckej Gallery is open to the public daily from 10:00 to 16:00 during the summer season of 2026; the admission price includes the permanent exhibition and one exhibition.

The Skalka rock chapel was carved into the rock around 1870 and later developed into a pilgrimage site. Believers meet there for prayers, litanies, the Stations of the Cross, and a Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows.

The Chapel of Saint Anne in the Oravice district of Tvrdošín was built in 1817–1820 and restored in 1864. The Sacred Heart Church in the Krásna Hôrka district of Tvrdošín was built in 1890; Masses are held there regularly on Sundays.

The sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Tvrdošín dates from the late 18th century, stands on the north side of the churchyard, and was created by stonemasons from the Bielopotocký family.

Water and nature

The Orava and Oravica rivers, as well as their tributaries Medvecký potok and Hldočín, flow through Tvrdošín. The Orava and its tributaries form a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The courses of the Orava and Oravica rivers form an aquatic-terrestrial biocorridor.

The small-area protected landscape feature CHA of the Orava River includes Tvrdošín on both sides of the river and is subject to the fourth level of protection.

Bučník, which is considered a mountain, lies in the immediate vicinity of Tvrdošín. Magura and Furkaska are also considered mountains and lie in the immediate vicinity of Tvrdošín. Bobrowiec is considered a mountain and lies in the vicinity of Tvrdošín.

The Tatrzański Park Narodowy lies in the wider regional surroundings of Tvrdošín.

Leisure and events

The Tvrdošín municipal indoor swimming pool offers recreational swimming to the public. It operates year-round and serves sporting, swimming-sport, and relaxing purposes. Its wellness area includes a Finnish sauna, a steam sauna, and an infrared sauna, as well as a whirlpool and loungers.

The Tvrdošín balancing reservoir is located on the Orava and has a stated volume of 2.9 million cubic metres. The Štefanov nad Oravou–Dlhá–Malatiná MTB route leads to the Márie Medveckej Gallery and offers the option of continuing along this reservoir or crossing the Orava via a footbridge to reach the centre of Tvrdošín.

The cycling route below the Roháče in the Skorušinské vrchy is classified as moderately difficult and, on good surfaces, is also suitable for road bikes in some sections away from state roads.

The town of Tvrdošín holds the Folklore Festival beneath Osobita every year. It takes place in the natural amphitheatre of Oravice, a district of Tvrdošín; in 2026, the 35th edition was held there.

Markets and traditions

The Michalský jarmok has an established tradition in Tvrdošín. Visitors will find handicrafts, traditional specialities, handmade products, and various refreshments there.
