Oravsky Biely Potok: Holiday Apartment Between Culture and Stonemasonry Tradition

Oravsky Biely Potok combines a location in the Skorušina Mountains with a stonemasonry tradition that has its own history in the Orava region. The village lies in the valley of the Studený potok in the Skorušina Mountains. State Road 2/584 runs through Oravský Biely Potok. Thus, the landscape setting, the road running through the village, and the craft tradition already stand side by side at the beginning of the description.

Culture

The cultural features of Oravský Biely Potok include 13 stone crosses with statues of saints. The local folklore traditions are preserved by FS Osľárik. Another sacred feature is Kostol sv. Štefana, kráľa, a single-nave church in the Classical style. The building was constructed between 1797 and 1800 and has predominantly Baroque interior furnishings. The church combines its classification as a Classical-style building with predominantly Baroque interior furnishings; the construction period and furnishings mark different historical layers of design within the same sacred building.

The cultural elements represent different forms of the village’s inherited connection to place: the crosses and the church belong to the sacred sphere, while FS Osľárik preserves musically oriented folklore traditions. The result is not a single uniform theme, but rather a coexistence of stone, church architecture, and intangible cultural heritage.

The stonemasonry tradition is also connected with specific forms and projects. The Cesta Kameňa project presents the stonemasonry tradition and the artefacts of Oravský Biely Potok as cultural heritage. The project also includes the planned restoration of four stone crosses from the 18th and 19th centuries. For the cemetery, Cesta Kameňa provides for step-free access for visitors with reduced mobility and four bilingual information panels at the entrance. The project therefore encompasses both the presentation of the stone heritage and its planned preservation and interpretation at the cemetery. The restoration, the planned access, and the panels are described as components of this named project.

History

Oravský Biely Potok became one of the centres of stonemasonry production in the Orava region. In connection with the stonemasonry trade, the village was first mentioned in 1728 as a centre for the production of millstones. The local stonemasonry tradition included ring-shaped well rims called “címere”, measuring up to two metres in diameter. Millstones and “címere” therefore represent different products of the same craft tradition: the first term refers to the purpose of production, while the second refers to the ring-shaped form of the well rims. The measurement of up to two metres adds a specific dimension to this traditional description of their form.

Cycling

A specific cycling connection is also among the options described around the village: the Podbiel–Ťatliakovo jazero cycling route passes through Oravský Biely Potok. The route is suitable for mountain bikes. A stone nativity scene is considered a particularly attractive place to view in the public space. The route name refers to the connection between Podbiel and Ťatliakovo jazero, while its course through Oravský Biely Potok incorporates the village itself into this cycling connection. Thus, both the exact route and its stated suitability are identified.
