Suchá Hora: Holiday apartment amid Goral tradition, cycle route and wetlands

Suchá Hora combines a turbulent history with a living Goral tradition, cross-border cycle routes and protected wetland landscapes. The municipality was established during the Vlach colonization; its first written record dates from 1566. From 1920 to 1924 and for several months in 1939, Suchá Hora belonged to Poland.

Culture

Suchá Hora is part of the Goral dialect area comprising 24 municipalities in the western and northern part of the Upper Orava region. The Goral dialect is still used and shapes the cultural identity of the village. Living traditions include songs, music, folk costumes and customs. The Goral version of the folk costume resembles the costume worn in the Goral municipalities east of the Tatras and is still worn on major church holidays and special occasions. Traditional dances associated with Suchá Hora include do zvíjania, goralský, zbojecký, košíček, kresaný and odzvodný.

The Goral folklore group from Suchá Hora preserves Goral songs, dances and music from the municipalities of Hladovka and Suchá Hora in its repertoire. In 2019, it organized the 12th Goralská nedeľa, featuring local and visiting folklore ensembles. Goralská nedeľa is a recurring local folklore event; the 13th, 14th and 16th editions are also documented. At the 14th Goralská nedeľa, guests performed together with local dancers and musicians.

Traditional architecture is also part of the villagescape. Suchá Hora has wooden houses from the early 20th century with three rooms, masonry foundations and outbuildings, often arranged under a shared gabled roof covered with shingles. At traditional Goral Páračky gatherings, Goral music as well as mulled wine and šišky were served.

The Church of Christ the King was built in 1934, consecrated after reconstruction on 6 August 1995, and most recently renovated in 2021–2022. It belongs to the local parish, which provides current information about Mass times and church announcements.

Cycle Route and Historic Traces

The signposted cycle route section between Trstená and Suchá Hora has new traffic signs and additional facilities. The section includes rest areas with benches, tables, bicycle racks and waste bins. Views of the Tatras and bilingual information panels about the former railway and its history accompany the route. Two cycling information panels stand along the cross-border route in Suchá Hora.

The former railway to Suchá Hora ran from Kraľovany and Trstená towards Nowy Targ and was extended to Poland in 1904. The Route Around the Tatras cycle route leads to the ruins of the former Suchá Hora railway station. From this former station, the main route continues for another 9 km through the green landscapes of Orava.

Nature

Suchá Hora is one of the cadastral areas of the protected Natura 2000 site Horná Orava. North of the municipality lies the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Horná Orava), which extends to the Polish border. The northern part of the cadastral area also contains a raised bog shaped by former surface peat extraction.

Near Suchá Hora lies the Rudné nature reserve, located in extensive forest wetlands with a taiga-like character that continue seamlessly into Poland. The Rudné wetland is the only known site in Slovakia of the rare species skaliarka močiarna. Rudné is also an ecological and functional area for black grouse breeding grounds in the Horná Orava Special Protection Area for Birds.

Border Region

The border crossing near Suchá Hora was reopened on 1 May 1991. Following Slovakia’s accession to the Schengen Area on 21 December 2007, border controls were completely abolished.
