Sklené: Renaissance, Glass History and Hiking Trails

Sklené lies at the southern tip of Turčianska záhradka, at the eastern foot of the Žiar Mountains. The municipality extends between 511 and 892 metres above sea level. In this combination of mountain landscape, a historically shaped village character, and marked trails, nature and culture meet within a compact area.

Landscape and Village Character

Near the church stands a small-leaved lime tree about 400 years old, approximately 20 metres high, with a trunk circumference of 635 centimetres. Sklené is also characterised by chain-like colonisation-style development. Sklené railway station lies on the single-track, non-electrified Horná Štubňa–Prievidza railway line and thus forms another established part of the village.

The paths through the landscape are also specifically marked. The Ráztočno–Sklené pri Handlovej hiking trail is marked in blue in the regional hiking trail list and is 9 kilometres long. For cyclists, the Remäta–Sklené route passes the Horský hotel Remata recreation centre. It then runs over meadows along the ridge into the municipality of Sklené.

Culture and History

In the village centre stands the Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The building was constructed in 1626–1627 in the Renaissance style on the foundations of an older Gothic structure. Inside is a Renaissance hall. In 1963, the church was declared a national cultural monument. The cemetery around the church contains cast-iron crosses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The former judge's house is also part of the historic building stock. It was originally a Renaissance building from the early 17th century and was remodelled after 1912. Another trace of the village's history leads to Biely potok: the remains of the first glass furnaces have been preserved there, and a glass furnace still stands there today. Glass was produced in Sklené until 25 June 1875.

A memorial commemorates the Sklené massacre; it was unveiled at the site of the event in 1994. Thus, different historical layers stand side by side in Sklené: ecclesiastical Renaissance architecture, older settlement forms, industrial glassmaking, and a clearly designated memorial site.

Hiking Trails Around Sklené

From Sklené, Bralová skala can be reached via forest and mountain paths by experienced hikers. A red-marked hiking trail leads from Sklené to Bralová skala, where the well-known Cesta hrdinov SNP runs. Another blue-marked hiking trail leads from Sklené to Sklenianske lúky.

The Útulňa SNP Sklené can be reached from Sklené via trails that are initially marked blue and then red. The route is 5.3 kilometres long and takes about 1.5 hours. The shelter lies directly on the red-marked Cesta hrdinov SNP trail. In this way, short, clearly marked trail sections meet longer mountain connections in the surrounding area.
