Holiday apartment in Ľubochňa: Valley trails, forest railway and Kúpeľný Park

Ľubochňa lies on the Ľubochnianska Valley, the longest valley in the Veľká Fatra mountain range. One route through the valley leads into Veľká Fatra National Park. Marked trails, technical monuments, historic buildings and parks come together here in a townscape that closely connects nature and culture.

Nature and trails

The Ľubochňa–Dolina educational trail begins at the municipal office. The educational trail in Ľubochňa is a self-guided circular route for hiking and cycling that can be used in summer and winter. It consists of ten stations and an introductory information board.

A green-marked cycle route leads from Ľubochňa through the Ľubochnianska Valley. A yellow-marked hiking trail begins at Ľubochňa railway station and leads over Mount Havran towards Ostré. From the centre of Ľubochňa, a red-marked trail passes the Korbeľka Nature Reserve and continues to Mount Kopa, which offers views of the Váh Valley. Another green-marked hiking trail runs from Ľubochňa railway station to the Prameň Mária spring.

Prameň Mária and its surroundings, including a pond, form a rest area in Ľubochňa. The trails through the valley and to the named landscape sites thus range from a self-guided circular route to marked connections towards Veľká Fatra.

Culture and history

A distinctive historical feature is the Ľubochnianska forest railway. It was built in 1903–1904 as a narrow-gauge railway for transporting timber from the Ľubochnianska Valley. The railway was the first electrified railway in Central Europe and occasionally also carried tourists and spa guests.

The hydroelectric power station was built in 1904 on the site of an ironworks. It can be visited by prior arrangement; display panels in its rooms provide information about the history of this technical monument. Kollárov dom, a historic spa-style building with characteristic wooden balconies, is also part of the town’s historic character.

In Kúpeľný Park, the landscape park and the history of its design stand side by side: the park is a landscape park with Art Nouveau elements. Curving paths lead to small architectural features, interesting scenes, a pavilion, resting places and a fountain. The park also contains an original lime-tree avenue dating from the late 19th century.

The church in Ľubochňa also has a clearly documented history. The foundation stone was consecrated by Prelate Andrej Hlinka in 1937, and the church was blessed on 29 June 1938. In its present form, it was renovated during the tenure of the clergyman Ondrej Poľančík and consecrated by Mons. František Tondra on 3 July 1998.

The course of the year

The educational trail can be used in summer and winter. For winter sports, Ľubochňa has the 850-metre-long Vyšné Krátke slope. With sufficient natural snow, it offers good conditions for family skiing.

Rezbárske dni takes place regularly in August. The annual cycle of events in the town thus includes both a seasonally usable trail connection and a recurring event in August.
