Discover Sučany – Holiday apartment between hiking, nature and culture

Sučany does not present itself as a one-dimensional destination. Activity, nature, water and history emerge in clearly distinguishable forms, each bearing its own names, dimensions and historical references. One particularly clearly defined facet is the Sučiansky historicko-náučný chodník: it is located in the built-up area of Sučany and is designed as a year-round, linear trail that can be used on foot and by bicycle. At 3 km in length and with an elevation difference of 24 m, its extent and elevation profile are also specified.

The educational trail thus combines several clearly defined characteristics: it is locally assigned to the built-up area, its use is not limited to any particular season, and it is intended for both pedestrians and cyclists. Its linear form, together with the information on length and elevation difference, additionally describes its route and relief without equating the trail with the other landscape areas.

Hiking and cycling

The activity-related aspect is not limited to this trail. From Sučany, there are opportunities for hiking into the Sučianska dolina. In addition, several cycling routes can be reached from Sučany. Both activities are thus explicitly associated with the location, while their stated destinations differ.

Culture

History appears in Sučany in different forms and periods. The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the oldest architectural monument in the territory of Sučany. It was built in the last quarter of the 13th century and was originally early Gothic; in 1964, it was declared a national cultural monument.

The pillory of Sučany is a cultural monument from the first half of the 19th century. Sučianska Skala is also home to a fortified hilltop settlement that was inhabited by several cultures in prehistoric times. Sacred architecture, a single cultural monument and traces of early settlement therefore stand side by side, each with its own historical classification.

Nature

The natural features are distributed across rock, water and valley landscapes. There are several equipped climbing routes on Sučianska Skala. The upper areas of Sučianska Skala offer views of the Greater and Lesser Fatra. Here, rock and mountain views are connected through specific recreational and landscape features.

Lake Ontário lies within the cadastral territory of Sučany. It is used for boating and is also an attractive area for anglers. Two different forms of use are therefore explicitly identified for this body of water.

The Sučianska dolina lies on the southern side of the Krivánska Malá Fatra. The Pod Rígľom nature reserve is located at the entrance to the Sučianska dolina. It covers 14.23 hectares and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The Biely potok flows through the Sučianska dolina. The valley landscape is therefore clearly classified through its geographical location, the protected area, its size and level of protection, as well as the stream flowing through it.

The location information for the lake and the position of the valley each independently place the water and valley landscapes within Sučany’s cadastral and territorial structure, respectively. Together with the rock formations of Sučianska Skala, this creates a factually clear landscape composed of named individual areas, whose uses and geographical relationships are described separately in each case.
