Nature

The Krpeľany Reservoir was built on the Váh River between 1952 and 1957 and is part of the Vážska kaskáda cascade system. Its approximate volume is 8.3 million cubic metres, while the flooded area covers 1.26 square kilometres. Activities

The Tiesňava educational trail is located in Krpeľany behind the Váh canal and has four information boards. It can be reached by bus, train or car; parking is available at the introductory information point. The cycling route is suitable for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. One cycling route begins in Sučany and follows the Váh diversion canal to Krpeľany.

In Krpeľany, it is worth stopping at the technical facilities of the Krpeľany hydroelectric power plant and reservoir, where the Váh divides into two parts. Krpeľany also has a ski lift and a sports complex serving as facilities for sporting activities. The 48th Výstup na KOPU was scheduled for 30 May 2026; the ascent was to begin at the TJ Dynamo Krpeľany sports complex and lead to Kopa, at an elevation of 1,187 metres, in the Veľká Fatra.

Culture and History

Hrádok Pohanovo, also called Pohanovo, lies southeast of Krpeľany. The archaeological site has a surrounding rampart and was used during the La Tène period and the Middle Ages. It is registered in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number 2198/1. After the arrival of the Slavs in the Turčianska kotlina basin, the site was inhabited from the second half of the 10th century until 1250.

Krpeľany is also home to a Neoclassical manor house from the first half of the 19th century. The village's cultural traditions are maintained by children's and adult folk groups with their own traditional music.

Getting There

Krpeľany has a railway station on route 400 between Žilina and Košice, as well as direct passenger services. Road 01893 connects the village to the E 18 trunk road.

Geographical Setting

Krpeľany is a starting point for trips to the northern part of the Veľká Fatra. A crossing via Ľubochnianske sedlo to Ľubochňa is well known; in the Middle Ages, a road from Turiec to Liptov ran there.
