Martin combines Slovak literature, regional art, folk culture and a distinctive via ferrata to create a diverse local profile. The thematic spectrum includes cultural institutions, folk culture and the Ferrata Horskej záchrannej služby Martinské hole.

Culture

The Múzeum Andreja Kmeťa is housed in the first building of the SNM, which was built in 1908. This building was declared a National Cultural Monument by a government decree dated 16 August 1994. The museum houses the permanent exhibitions Kmetianum and Príroda Turca.

The Literárne múzeum SNK is located in the centre of Martin, in the first historic building of Matica slovenská. The building was declared a National Cultural Monument in 1961. The museum presents the history of Slovak literature and book culture through a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions, and cultural and educational events. The Literárne múzeum SNK is closed to the public until further notice. Guided tours of the Národný cintorín can still be booked through the Literárne múzeum SNK.

The Turčianska Gallery presents works by visual artists from the Turiec region from different generations in solo, retrospective and group exhibitions. The gallery has also opened a new permanent exhibition about Mikuláš Galanda entitled “legenda – la ganda – galanda”. The exhibition explores Galanda’s childhood and the experiences that shaped his first graphic works.

Another cultural venue is the Slovenské komorné divadlo Martin. Its stage is located in the historic Národný dom; its repertoire ranges from classical to experimental productions.

Folk culture

The Museum of the Slovak Village is Slovakia’s largest open-air ethnographic exhibition. It provides an insight into traditional folk architecture, forms of housing and the way of life in north-western Slovakia. The museum is located in Jahodnícke háje in the south-east of the city of Martin. Since 1991, it has organised events as part of the ethnographic year, showcasing examples of traditional folk production, craftsmanship, customs and folklore.

The Ethnography Museum SNM Martin hosts temporary exhibitions on various topics throughout the year. In addition to the folk culture presented on a permanent basis, changing content is therefore also a focus.

Nature

The Ferrata Horskej záchrannej služby Martinské hole leads from Martins Stráne along the Pivovarský potok towards Martinské hole. Its lower section is laid out as an educational trail with information boards and rest areas and leads to the actual via ferrata. The via ferrata can be reached via a red hiking trail from the Martin Stráne, konečná MHD stop.
