Jakubovany – Nature and Trails in the Western Tatras

Jakubovany lies in the landscape of the Western Tatras National Park, below the 2,184 m-high peak of Baranec.

Nature

The Jakubovany–Baranec educational trail is located in the “Tatranský národný park” National Park. It is 8.5 km long and has an elevation gain of 1,470 m. The hiking information can be considered in terms of the starting point, walking time, length and elevation gain. These perspectives help with planning without equating the routes with one another. When mentally organising different days, visitors can consider the natural area, route, time required and elevation gain as separate points of reference.

The combination of route length and elevation gain describes the educational trail from two different perspectives. The kilometres indicate the extent of the route, while the elevation gain adds its vertical profile.

Hiking and Cycling

The route over Baranec to Žiarska dolina begins in Jakubovany; a walking time of 9 hours is given for it. By contrast, a designated route from Studená dolina to Jakuboviansky Vodopád and back is given a walking time of 1 hour. The different durations provide a clear basis for comparing the time required when planning your own activities.

The two hiking descriptions therefore differ not only in duration, but also in their routes and the stated starting and destination points. When organising the days, visitors can consider the long connection via Baranec separately from the shorter out-and-back route, without turning the information into a single tour.

A cycling route leads from Jakubovany into Račkova dolina. It can then be continued along the Tatranská magistrála to the mouth of Žiarska dolina. When putting together active days, hiking routes and cycling connections can be considered separately according to route type and timeframe.

The cycling route is described as a connection with a possible continuation: it first leads into Račkova dolina, followed by the stated continuation along the Tatranská magistrála. Winter

Cross-country ski trails begin in Jakubovany or lead into the village. In the direction of Žiarska dolina and Račkova dolina, they can connect to the Tatranská magistrála. The Bane ski area near Jakubovany has a 500 m-long ski lift.

Bane is located in a foothill landscape below the Baranec massif. The winter sports information distinguishes between trails with connecting directions and a ski area with a specifically stated lift length.

The winter activities are therefore presented through various types of information: for the trails, the location and the directions towards the named valleys are the focus, while for Bane, the length of the ski lift and the landscape below the massif are emphasised.

History and Tradition

On Vysoký Hrádok above Jakubovany are remains that are probably connected with a Celtic settlement. Later, Vysoký Hrádok served as a guard post on the trade route from the Spiš region.

In Studená dolina, visitors can observe traditional sheep herding and sheep milking. They can also taste and buy sheep products there.

The information about Vysoký Hrádok combines an archaeological connection with its later role on a trade route. In Studená dolina, by contrast, the focus is on the observable tradition surrounding sheep keeping and the handling of the products derived from it. History and rural everyday knowledge thus emerge as distinct cultural themes.
