Vrútky in the Turčianska Basin – Hiking Trails and Railway Culture | Holiday Apartment

Vrútky lies in the northern part of the Turčianska Basin, on the left side of the Váh’s floodplain and terrace landscape, at the foot of the Lúčanská section of the Lesser Fatra. As a result, different themes come together in the town: routes into the mountain landscape, cycling connections along the rivers, an outdoor swimming pool, and a remarkable railway and memorial culture.

Nature

The Karvaša a Blahovca educational trail was created by the town of Vrútky in 2021. Hiking trails in the Lúčanská Malá Fatra lead from the endpoint of Karvaša-and-Blahovca Street towards Minčol and then onward to Martinské hole. The landscape can also be explored via two marked cycling connections: the red-marked Turčianska cycling highway leads from Vrútky via Lipovec, Turčianske Kľačany, Sučany, and municipalities at the foot of the Veľká Fatra to Turčianske Teplice. A yellow-marked cycling route runs from Vrútky along the banks of the Turiec on a newly built cycle path to Martin.

The two cycling connections follow different routes: the red highway connects Vrútky with several municipalities and extends as far as Turčianske Teplice, while the yellow route follows the banks of the Turiec and ends in Martin. The cycling network includes a rest area in Vrútky with a shelter, parking spaces, and bicycle stands. It also has charging stations for electric vehicles and e-bikes, a pump, and tools for minor bicycle repairs.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1905 in the Neo-Gothic style. It stands on the site of an early Gothic church. The Evangelical Church of Dr. Martin Luther is also Neo-Gothic and was built in 1903.

The Vrútky synagogue was built in 1910 as a Neolog synagogue and today serves cultural purposes for the town of Vrútky. It is therefore both a historic building and a still-used cultural venue.

The permanent exhibition of the railway town of Vrútky presents the town’s historical development from prehistoric times to the 20th century. It can be visited by prior telephone appointment. The grounds of Výhrevňa Vrútky contain historic railway vehicles and historic railway technology. The railway connection reaches back into the town’s development: in the second half of the 19th century, Vrútky developed into an important railway junction.

The memorial room dedicated to Hana Zelinová commemorates the Slovak writer who was born in Vrútky. The exhibits preserved there include her authentic furniture, her desk, a collection of her works published in various world languages, and other valuable items.

Leisure and the Year

The municipal outdoor swimming pool in Vrútky offers opportunities for relaxation as well as recreational and sports swimming. Since 2020, the week-long memorial and hiking programme Memoriál Stopami ukrývaných detí has begun in Vrútky every year in the first half of July.
