Discover Príbovce: Culture, Nature and Holiday Apartments

Príbovce lies in the centre of the Turiec Basin on the alluvial fan of Blatnický potok, below its confluence with the Turiec River. The history of the village includes a Lusatian urnfield, which bears witness to settlement at the end of the Bronze Age, and an old historic road from Ponitrie, along which Príbovce once stood.

History

The past is particularly vividly reflected in the village’s churches and historic buildings. The Roman Catholic Church of sv. Šimona a Júdu dates from the 14th century and was built in the Gothic style. In the 17th century, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Its furnishings include a valuable Renaissance bell from 1591.

The evangelical church in Príbovce was built in 1829 in the Baroque-Classical style. It replaced an older wooden church erected during the period of religious tolerance in 1783. Príbovce thus has buildings standing side by side whose construction and alteration visibly reflect different centuries.

Culture

Another historical trace is the Achimských water mill. It is now the only one of the historic mills of the Turiec region still standing in Príbovce. Near the confluence of the Turiec and Blatnický potok there is also a manor house with a round bastion tower, known by local residents as “kaštieľ”. The manor house was built on a Renaissance foundation and remodelled at the beginning and towards the end of the 19th century.

Throughout its history, the manor house served as a primary school, kindergarten and municipal library, as well as a venue for other educational and social activities. Its history of use thus adds a social dimension of the village to the architectural traces of the Renaissance and the 19th century.

Nature

Several protected areas extend into the territory of Príbovce. These include the Turiec National Nature Reserve. The protected area SKUEV 0382 Turiec and Blatnický potok also extends into the municipal territory. In addition, the Mokrade Turca wetlands are protected under international conventions.

The landscape is closely connected with the waterways that already determine the location of the village: Blatnický potok, its confluence and the Turiec River. The names of the protected areas preserve this geographical connection, as does the description of Príbovce’s location in the centre of the Turiec Basin.

Cycling

Marked and maintained cycling route No. 5427 passes through Príbovce. It is marked and maintained by the Turčianska bicyklová skupina JUS. Cycling route No. 5427 is 10 km long.

The Tanková cesta route also includes Príbovce. It is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes and offers views across the entire Turiec Basin. This connects the village with two different cycling routes: the 10-kilometre-long Route No. 5427, and Tanková cesta for mountain bikes and trekking bikes, with its views across the basin.

Getting There

There is a bus stop for both directions of travel within the municipality of Príbovce, approximately in the centre of the village, near the municipal office. Príbovce is well served by regional bus services from Martin and by long-distance bus connections.
