Hiking and cycling routes run through the cadastral area of Lukavica between Zvolen and Banská Bystrica. A route connected to the hiking trail leads from Lukavica towards Poľana. Lukavica has a designated viewpoint called Humenica. The cadastral area lies within the Poľana Biosphere Reserve and is therefore also part of a broader natural setting. The Medokýš mineral spring (ZV-25) is located approximately 300 m south of Lukavica, in the valley floor of the Lukavica stream. A wooden shelter stands above the spring. Locals and occasional tourists use the mineral spring water for drinking.

Near Lukavica, an access path from the Banská Bystrica–Zvolen section of the Slovak Way of St. James leads across a footbridge to the Medokýš mineral spring on the Lukavica stream.

Culture and History

One of the notable structures is Lukavica’s Neo-Gothic bell tower, which dates from the last third of the 19th century. The bell tower was renovated in 1950 and 1992; its bell dates from 1920. The same building therefore brings together the tower’s construction period, later preservation phases and a specific historic feature.

Lukavica’s current cultural centre is housed in a school building dating from 1912. Among the villages, Lukavica has one of the best-preserved original settlement layouts. The architectural heritage therefore extends beyond individual buildings and is also evident in the preserved layout of the village.

Lukavica’s historical culture included bird-catching and, in autumn, competitions to catch thrushes. Lukavica’s regular cultural calendar also includes a Carnival celebration. Hana Ponická’s time in Lukavica was processed in her memoir-influenced prose work Lukavické zápisky, which stands between an autobiographical novel and literary fiction and uses real names as well as actual events. Another sign of the village’s history is the coat of arms of Lukavica: it shows three black jackdaws on golden branches within a wreath that originated from the municipal seal of 1851.
