Holiday apartment in Horné Zahorany between the church and hiking trails

Horné Zahorany combines classical architecture with distinctive landscapes, rural experiences and several routes through the southeastern Slovak Ore Mountains. Between the church, uplands, bodies of water and cycling tours, the village presents a diverse picture that encompasses historical landmarks as well as direct encounters with nature and rural life.

Culture

Horné Zahorany was the birthplace of the Slovak poet, prose writer and dramatist Ľudovít Kubáni. A memorial plaque with a relief of the writer, who came from the municipality, is located on the school building in Horné Zahorany. Another defining building is the Evangelical classical church, which was built between 1808 and 1814. Its altar wall is designed in the classical style, has four columns and features a central painting of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane from 1913 by E. Putra. The church has a hall with a segmental apse and a flat wooden ceiling. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

The classical bell tower of Horné Zahorany is also one of the village’s historical landmarks. It dates from 1790 and has a Baroque cupola.

Landscape

Horné Zahorany lies on both sides of the Veľký potok, which flows through the municipality, in the southeastern Slovak Ore Mountains. The Veľký potok rises in the cadastral territory of Horné Zahorany. The area’s geological character includes the relict upland surface, which consists of andesite. Landslides have created block fields in Horné Zahorany. Oak forests are found only in the northern part of the village.

Trails and tours

The red hiking trail 0805 passes through Horné Zahorany. A section of the route Cesta muránskej Venuše also runs from Rimavská Sobota via Nižná Pokoradz through Horné Zahorany. Several cycling tours pass through the village: Gotický kostolík v Kraskove, Náučný chodník Drienčanského krasu, Magin hrad and Hradisko Drieňok. This brings together various named routes in the village, ranging from a red hiking trail and a regional route to four cycling tours.

Rural experiences
