Glassmaking Tradition and Production

Utekáč is shaped by a glassmaking tradition that lasted for more than 215 years. The glassworks had the largest melting house in the Kingdom of Hungary. The roof structure of the glassworks is also of historic significance and was recognised as a cultural and technical monument. The local history of glassmaking therefore encompasses an exceptionally long tradition, the scale of the melting house and a preserved architectural testament.

The Clara glassworks produced utility glass and lighting glass. The product range also included paraffin lamp cylinders and, from 1917 onwards, glass bulbs for electric light bulbs. The various products demonstrate the development from glassware for everyday use and lighting to components for electrical technology. The history combines craftsmanship, industrial scale and technical application within a single subject area. For those interested in culture, the appeal therefore lies not only in the longevity of the glassmaking tradition, but also in the different functions that glass production served over the years.

Historic Buildings

The architectural history includes Count Forgáč’s manor house, built around 1800, and the Neo-Gothic Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua, built around 1824. The chapel contains the Kuchynkov family crypt. The manor house and chapel date from different periods and accordingly represent different historic building functions: one building represents secular ruling architecture, while the other is a Neo-Gothic religious building with a family memorial site.

Climbing Wall and Hiking

The climbing wall is located on Utekáč’s historic chimney and operates from 1 April to 31 October. The stated options for reaching the climbing wall include travelling by train, car, on foot and by bicycle. The facility combines the historic chimney with an explicitly time-limited sporting use. When planning a visit, the stated period and current opening hours are important; any special opening times should also be checked in advance.

Hiking is available in the Veporské vrchy mountains. In addition, the Utekáčska horská tridsiatka is a local hiking offering. Two differently named active themes are therefore presented side by side: a climbing wall on a historic chimney and a hiking offering associated with the Veporské vrchy mountains. The climbing wall operates from 1 October, while the two hiking themes are described without such an operating period. For hikes, current trail conditions and, where applicable, event times can be checked before travelling.

Winter

In winter, Utekáč offers ideal conditions for cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing is therefore a separate seasonal theme alongside the climbing wall and hiking offerings. While the climbing wall has an explicitly stated period of operation, cross-country skiing is directly associated with the winter conditions.
