Holiday apartment in Breznička at the confluence of the Ipeľ and Banský potok

Breznička lies at the confluence of the Banský potok and the Ipeľ River. In a small area, river landscapes, protected nature, churches and evidence from various eras come together. There are also cycling connections through the surrounding area and regional specialties that clearly establish the location’s culinary identity.

Culture and history

The evangelical church in Breznička was built in 1862 in the late Classicist style. It is a late Classicist hall church; its tower stands in front of the main façade and dates from 1882. Another sacred building is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was built from 1781 to 1785 in the late Baroque style and consecrated on 11 September 1785. Its Classicist main altar dates from 1786, and it also contains a painting of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary from 1807.

Next to the tower of this church stand stone statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The tower also still contains a set of bells acquired in 1797 and dedicated to the Most Holy Name of Jesus and Mary.

The hillforts in the surrounding area also preserve various historical traces. The nearby small hillfort area known as Hrádok lies about 1.2 kilometres south of Breznička on a wooded ridge above the Ipeľ. It has two ditches and an arc-shaped rampart. Atypical prehistoric pottery from the Bronze Age Kyjatice culture, dating approximately from the 10th to the 8th century BC, was found there. The Intravilán hillfort is also located on the eastern edge of Breznička; it has an oval ground plan and a ditch, and its finds include pottery from the 12th to the 14th century.

Nature

Protected nature includes two notable pedunculate oaks, each with its own classification. The protected pedunculate oak near Breznička has a trunk circumference of 379 centimetres and is 16 metres tall. West of Breznička, in the hamlet of Močiar, stands another protected pedunculate oak, approximately 350 years old and placed under protection in 1996.

Near Breznička, the Ipeľ forms a pronounced river bend. At this point, its floodplain narrows to 500 metres and takes on a sickle-shaped or sigmoid form. In a preserved, meandering section of the Ipeľ in the cadastral area of Breznička, the adjacent meadows provide a habitat for the protected snake's-head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris).

The Ipeľská niva near Breznička has been designated a private protected area. It includes Carpathian oak-hornbeam forests, swampy alder forests and vegetation in shallow standing waters.

Cycling

Several connections pass through or lead to Breznička. Route 5609 from Breznička to Kotmanová is 24.7 kilometres long, marked in green and rated difficult. Its sections run on asphalt, paved paths, trails, as well as field and forest roads. Route 5609 also runs from Červeň to Breznička and continues there above the cemetery on forest and field roads.

A cycling educational trail from Lučenec via Poltár and Breznička to Málinec also passes through Breznička. It features easy to moderately difficult terrain and is connected to marked hiking trails.

Local life

The regularly held Breznícky Majáles includes folklore and sport. The municipality helps organise the folklore and sports day, combining the raising of a maypole, performances by folklore groups and heligonka players, and sporting events for children, young people and adults.

The cuisine of Breznička and the surrounding area also has its own local names. Parovec is one of the local specialties; it is made by boiling the liquid produced during fermentation with water, millet and salt. Nálesník is a potato lokša made from dough containing potatoes, similar to the dough used for halušky. Fučka consists of mashed potatoes mixed with flour.
