Kokava nad Rimavicou offers historical landmarks, craft traditions and marked trails. Stará škola Kokava is a historic building dating from 1913, a local memorial site and, since 2021, a cultural and educational venue.

Culture

Stará škola Kokava hosts exhibitions of historic glass and presentations of contemporary glass design under the title “Príbeh skla”. Stará škola also offers individual visits outside regular opening hours. The Včelí kRaj educational center in Liešnica provides another insight into the local cultural history, offering creative workshops for schools of all levels and the general public. Liešnica, the location of this educational center, is a district of Kokava nad Rimavicou and can be reached from the Vlkovo settlement.

Glass production in Kokava nad Rimavicou produced hollow, thick-walled, round green-glass bottles. These were used for filling mineral water in Slatina. Traditional weaving is also one of the locality’s inherited traditions: an institution in Kokava nad Rimavicou presents the process from flaxseed through linen fabric to products made from it.

History

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1820. In 1903, a tower with four bells and a choir were added to it. A Renaissance church originally built in 1566 is documented in Kokava nad Rimavicou; the lower part of the tower and a stone Gothic portal of the inner doors remain from the original church building dating from that year.

Distinctive historic buildings can also be found outside the church. Count Anton Forgáč had a Neoclassical manor house built in 1805, probably on the site of an older building. A bridge in Kokava nad Rimavicou is probably the oldest structure in the locality. The entrance to an old adit from former gold mining is also located here. This architectural landscape is complemented by a smaller Romantic building with historicist elements, probably built around 1890.

Trails and Landscape

The marked trails lead to named elevations and through the area surrounding the locality. A red-marked hiking trail leads to Diel, which lies at an elevation of 934 metres above sea level. A green-marked hiking trail leads to Slopovo, at 853 metres above sea level. Tourist Route No. 5466, marked in green, also runs from Kokava nad Rimavicou via Slopovo and Laz to Pereš Saddle.

A red-marked route from Rimavská Baňa reaches the centre of Kokava nad Rimavicou after running below Sinec and through Bodnárka. In the Kokavská rekreačná oblasť, alongside the ski slopes, there are scenically attractive meadow ridges. They are suitable for cross-country skiing, hiking and active cycling. The two natural mineral springs provide cold, hypotonic, naturally carbonated and iron-rich water.

Winter and Further Trails

The Kokava-Línia Ski Centre is located in the surroundings of Kokava nad Rimavicou. It offers easy, undemanding ski slopes that are particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. Two railway landmarks document the history of regional transport routes: the building of the Kokava nad Rimavicou railway station was constructed in 1908 together with the Poltár–Kokava nad Rimavicou railway line. A railway structure was built in 1909, when the railway line from Kokava nad Rimavicou to Utekáč was completed.
