Holiday apartment in Krná – woodland landscape and historic architecture

Krná lies in the southern part of the Veporské Slovenské rudohorie mountains, in the valley of the Krná stream. More than 59 percent of the cadastral area is forested, and deciduous forests grow in the surrounding area. The landscape also includes a chestnut grove with around 20 sweet chestnut trees and a remarkable individual tree with a trunk circumference of 305 centimetres. The common European adder occurs in the dispersed settlement areas of Krná.

Hiking

A marked red hiking trail on the Málinec–Kokava nad Rimavicou route passes by the lookout tower on Jasenina. The ascent to Jasenina takes place every year. The recommended route from Krná to Jasenina begins at the bus stop in Krná.

Culture

The oldest monument in Krná is a Neoclassical manor house dating from 1820. The manor house, built in 1820, was constructed on the site of a Renaissance manor house from the 17th century and has served as the Krná community centre since 1960. The evangelical church is also part of the local architectural and historical heritage: it was ceremonially consecrated on 22 October 1905. An altarpiece by Ľudovít Kubányi was acquired for the church.

The evangelical church in Krná was built without a tower. According to the community description, it was the only church of its kind in the evangelical a.-b. church district in Uhorské. In 1912, a separate belfry with two bells was added in Krná. The Krná–Závada belfry had already been built in 1893; it was erected by the residents of the dispersed settlement areas of Krná.

History and crafts

The first written mention of Krná dates from 1435. Traditional folk architecture has been preserved in the localities of Neklen, Závada, Osičiny and Nový svet. Sheep farming by local residents was part of the area’s traditional economy. The residents also made wooden utensils. The production of wooden wheels was once widespread in Krná and was carried out in as many as 14 households. Thus, alongside the manor house, church and belfries, rural architectural forms and craft activities also reflect the development of the village.

Krná can be reached by bus. The bus stop in Krná is also the starting point for the recommended route to Jasenina.
