Holiday Apartment in Hradište: Nature, Trails and Culture

Hradište lies in the deep valley of the Držkovo stream at the foot of the Stolické vrchy. From here, a paved road leads into the Hradišské vrchy. After four kilometres, you have to turn onto a hiking trail that leads from Málinec to Jasenina. The route to Jasenina is considered easy and is approximately 10 km long.

Nature

At the back of the garden of house no. 127 grow the protected sweet chestnut trees known as Hradišské gaštany. The garden is located in the cadastral area of Hradište pri Uhorskom in the Poltár District. The two protected sweet chestnut trees, Hradišské gaštany, are approximately 200 years old and 22 and 25 metres high, respectively.

The forests around Hradište are predominantly deciduous forests. Their tree species include oaks, beeches, hornbeams and Turkey oaks. The Hradišské vrchy also feature a scattered settlement structure, preserved elements of the original architecture and richly structured landscape vegetation.

The slopes around Hradište offer blackberries and rose hips; opportunities for mushroom picking have also been reported there. Wild animals that have returned to the forests around Hradište after a prolonged absence and now occur there permanently include bears, lynx, wildcats and wolves.

Culture

In 1822, a manor house in the Neoclassical style was built in Hradište. A Bronze Age hillfort is also located in the Hrádok area. Both monuments are among the various historical traces preserved in the village and its settlement areas.

The central evangelical church of Hradište is an Art Nouveau building with a hall layout and a tall projecting tower. It has a Neoclassical altar featuring the painting “Kristus na mori” by the painter František Gyurkovits from Lučenec.

Services are held in the evangelical church of Hradište every third Sunday. Every year, a church feast (odpust) is held in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the scattered settlement areas around Hradište on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Local Traditions

Near Hradište there is an orchard containing predominantly high-quality apple varieties grown without chemical treatment. It is maintained by the local civic association OZ PreHradište. The association also lists a tasting of homemade wines among the events it funds and organises.

A historical craft tradition of wheelmaking and the production of wooden dishes is documented for Hradište. Alongside the landscape and sacred buildings, local working and festive traditions therefore also form part of the preserved characteristics of the village.
