The Čabraď castle hill and its surroundings are a national nature reserve with the richest known occurrence of reptiles in Slovakia.
Culture
Several houses with distinctive Hontian architecture have been preserved in the village. The ruins of Čabraď Castle date back to a castle built in the 13th century. In the 16th century, Čabraď Castle was rebuilt as a fortress against the Ottomans. A memorial plaque in Čabradský Vrbovok commemorates Pavol Mudroň. The Protestant church was built in the Classicist style in 1773; in 1924, it was extended and rebuilt with the addition of a tower.
Nature
On 10 May 2019, conservation measures to protect reptiles were carried out in the cadastral area of Čabradský Vrbovok, in the Čabraď Nature Reserve and in the Natura 2000 site SKUEV0036 Rieka Litava. These included, among other things, mowing and the removal of woody growth and Japanese knotweed from plots C-KN 1373, 1380/1, 1375, 1376 and 1377/1.
Reptiles protected in the Čabraď Nature Reserve include the Aesculapian snake (Zamenis longissimus), dice snake (Natrix tessellata) and European green lizard (Lacerta viridis).
Getting around
A field path leads from Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle in about 1 hour and 15 minutes on foot; admission to the castle is free. The section from Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle is 7 km long, includes 160 m of ascent and 170 m of descent, and takes about 2.5 hours. The educational trail leads from Uňatín via Horný Badín and Čabradský Vrbovok to Čabraď Castle.
On the field path, the approximate time to the castle is the main focus, while the 7-kilometre section adds the ascent and descent, and the educational trail describes a sequence of places via Uňatín and Horný Badín. This allows the time, terrain profile and route to be viewed separately alongside one another before finalising your own day plan.
For personal planning, walking time, distance, ascent and descent can be considered separately. Anyone wishing to compare different route details can place the time and distance values side by side and note the elevation gain separately. This keeps your own day plan focused on the information that matters in each case.
The route details emphasise different aspects: on the field path, the approximate walking time to the castle is the main focus, while the longer section also gives the distance as well as the ascent and descent. The educational trail connects several places and leads via Uňatín and Horný Badín to Čabradský Vrbovok and onwards to the castle. Time, distance, elevation profile and sequence of places therefore remain separate points of reference.
