Podbrezová: Churches, Ferrous Metallurgy and the Feast of Saint George

Podbrezová can be explored through sacred architecture, industrial history and events. Podbrezová is home to the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen of Hungary. It was built between 1890 and 1892, is a single-nave Neo-Gothic structure and has stained-glass windows made in 1892 at the Forgó and Partners art workshop in Budapest. Culture

The main altarpiece of the Church of Saint George depicts Saint George fighting the dragon and was painted by Jozef Murgaš in 1893.

The Roman Catholic Gothic Church of Saint George with a massive square bell tower stands in Podbrezová-Lopej. A wall dating from the 17th century surrounds the church.

The exhibition Celtic Culture at the Museum of Železiarne Podbrezová was opened to the public in 2002. It presents the results of archaeological research from Hrádok near Horná Lehota, which indicate that Celts lived there more than 2,000 years ago.

Festivals and Sport

Every year on April 24 or the last Sunday in April, Podbrezová commemorates the chivalric tradition of the church in Lopej with the Feast of Saint George. The festival includes an allegorical knights’ procession, an extensive cultural program and a folk market.
