Holiday apartment in Telgárt: nature trails, viaducts and traditions

Telgárt lies between the Low Tatras, Slovak Paradise and Muránska planina national parks. The village offers nature trails, striking structures, living traditions and activities for winter and cultural experiences.

Nature and trails

The Meandre Hrona nature reserve is managed by the Low Tatras National Park and is subject to the fourth level of protection. The nine-kilometre Meandre Hrona educational trail runs through this natural area. In Telgárt, the trail can be started at Hotel Telgárt. Another educational trail leads to the source of the Hron: it starts at the Telgárt penzión railway stop and continues a few metres further to a seating area at the river’s source.

A specific connection is also signposted for cyclists. A newly created cycle route connects Telgárt with Šumiac and is offered together with e-bike access to Kráľova hoľa.

Culture

The Telgártský Viaduct is 22 metres high and 86 metres long. The Chmarošský Viaduct consists of nine stone arches with a clear height of up to 18 metres and can be seen from the main road. Telgártska slučka includes a spiral tunnel with an arch radius of 400 metres and a length of 1,239 metres.

A monument commemorating the Slovak National Uprising stands in Telgárt’s village square. Voglov chodník leads to the wooden cross on Ždiar above Telgárt. Ždiar near Telgárt is also home to the highest wooden cross in Slovakia.

Telgárt’s Chrám Najsvätejšej Trojice is a Baroque-Classical church dating from 1784. It is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number 84/1. The church in Telgárt helps preserve local traditions such as pilgrimages and religious festivals; these also attract visitors from the surrounding regions.

Culture and customs

The inhabitants of Telgárt continue to preserve old customs and traditions, as well as a folk costume that is still worn. The polyphonic singing of the Horehronie region is also part of this cultural environment: in 2017, with the support of the municipalities of Vernár, Telgárt, Šumiac and Pohorelá, it was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Telgárt is home to a fully functioning blacksmith’s workshop. During hands-on workshops, visitors can try blacksmithing for themselves.

Winter and regional cuisine

Ski Telgárt has nine downhill runs and seven lifts at an altitude of 905 to 1,309 metres. The runs have a total length of 6.5 kilometres. The Ski Telgárt resort also has a one-kilometre cross-country ski trail.

Depo Café Telgárt is located in a historic railway carriage and offers a view of the Chmarošský Viaduct. Telgárt Resort serves traditional dishes from the Horehronie region, such as halušky and Telgárt podpecníky, as well as the local beer “Telgartská 12”.

At Telgárt’s Čučoriedkový deň, there is a baking competition for blueberry specialities, tastings of traditional and modern recipes, and a presentation of dessert preparation. Blueberry cakes, strudels and preserves are also available; there is also music, children’s theatre and folklore.
