Holiday apartment in Brezno: culture, history and nature

Brezno combines an unusually large historic square with museums, sacred art, immersive spaces and nature activities within the city. The rectangular Námestie gen. M. R. Štefánika measures 213 × 146 metres and is unusually large for Slovakia. Because of its significant cultural and historical value, the square has been designated a heritage conservation area. Brezno City Park is the only historic urban park in the upper Pohronie region and is a national cultural monument.

Culture

Directly on Brezno’s main square, the Horehronské múzeum presents exhibitions in three historic buildings covering regional ways of life and culture, the history of the town, and an exhibition dedicated to the memory of Milan Rastislav Štefánik. The museum also includes a historic bell-ringer’s apartment. One permanent historical exhibition at the Horehronské múzeum is entitled “Brezno v premenách času”.

The Piarist Monastery in Brezno was built between 1694 and 1713. The chapel of the former Piarist Monastery houses Brezno’s oldest altarpiece: a panel painting of Saint Barbara from a late Gothic winged altarpiece dating from the late 15th century. The chapel also preserves Brezno’s oldest movable monument, a polychrome wood carving of the Madonna and Child from the late 15th century. Another prominent building is the Brezno Synagogue, with its elegant octagonal tower and onion-shaped finial; it was consecrated in 1902.

The foundation stone of Brezno’s town tower was laid in 1830. The tower served as a bell tower and watchtower and now houses an exhibition about Milan Rastislav Štefánik, a period-furnished bell-ringer’s apartment and a viewing platform offering a bird’s-eye view of the town.

History and experiences

At Námestie gen. Štefánika, in Gate No. 2, the “Nostalgia” exhibition focuses on the socialist era. It features themed images and panels as well as educational elements. The exhibition also includes the interactive game “Ako sa žilo v časoch nie tak dávnych” in a period-furnished apartment.

Svet Ilúzií adds a different kind of immersive experience: interactive fantasy spaces are based on discovery, playful experiences and altered perceptions of objects. It also includes an interactive underground area inspired by the mining history of the Horehronie region.

Historical everyday culture is represented by a rare wooden laundry mangle from the first half of the 19th century. It is located in a typical craftsman’s and farmer’s house of a blue-print dyer at 20 Rázusova Street in Brezno and can be visited through the Horehronské múzeum.

Nature and trails

The Náučný banský chodník is approximately 6 km long, has 12 stations, takes around 2 to 3 hours and passes old mining and ironworks sites within the city.

In the Banisko district, there is an enclosure with fallow deer, mouflon and red deer. The animals can be observed, photographed and fed. Next to it are a historic orchard serving as an arboretum and a recreation area. Interactive information boards provide information about the animals and the trees of the surrounding forests.

Another path leads to the final station of the Stations of the Cross near Brezno. The climb is easy, takes around 20 minutes and offers a beautiful view of the town. During the summer season, a tourist train also operates on the streets of Brezno and in the surrounding area.
