Holiday Apartment in Bystrá: Caves, Culture and the Low Tatras

Bystrianska Cave is known for its remarkable rock formations, the development of its underground spaces and its sinter formations. It is designated as an accessible cave and a national natural monument.

Nature

The sightseeing route in Bystrianska Cave is 580 m long, runs with almost no change in elevation and takes 45 minutes. The route includes 26 steps. The cave entrance is approximately 120 m from the car park and can be reached with only a slight change in elevation.

Caves and Trails

There are two accessible caves in the municipality of Bystrá: Bystrianska Cave and Dead Bats’ Cave. The two names represent different forms of cave exploration. It is not possible to drive to the entrance lodge of Dead Bats’ Cave; this is followed by a 90-minute ascent along a marked hiking trail.

With a guide, Dead Bats’ Cave offers tourist Route A for children aged eight and over, as well as more demanding speleotrekkings of difficulty levels B and C. The range of activities mentioned there therefore extends from a guided route with a specified age limit to tours of greater difficulty.

Culture

The church in Bystrá was completed in 1915 and consecrated on 17 September 1916. Its altars and pulpit are Neo-Gothic.

At a bridge on the right bank of the Bystrianka stands the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, between two lime trees. It was built in 1836 using fines imposed on workers at the Bystrá hammer mills. The building thus connects a specific place by the water with the history of the local hammer mills.

The exhibition “Tradičná drevenica – V krojoch a príbehoch” provides insights into the lives of ancestors, customs and impressive personal stories. It displays folk costumes from Heľpa, Polomka and Pohorelá. During your visit, you can also learn about a traditional wedding from the Horehronie region and find out about everyday life in the past and household skills once commonly practised.

Practical Information

Kolkáreň Bystrá is a modern skittles alley with two lanes in the heart of the Low Tatras. Advance booking by telephone is required for Kolkáreň Bystrá. The Zuna Amphitheatre in Bystrá is located next to the car park by Bystrianska Cave.

The modern Horehronie Information Centre is located directly in the car park by Bystrianska Cave, near the Zuna Amphitheatre. It offers comprehensive tourist information, a relaxation zone, toilets and an equipped service area for visitors of all ages. The exhibition “Tradičná drevenica – V krojoch a príbehoch” is located 150 m from the Horehronie Information Centre in the car park by Bystrianska Cave. Advance registration is required to visit it, and admission is charged.

Faith and Community

For the night of 20–21 March 2026, the second edition of the “Extrémna Krížová Cesta” was announced as a silent pilgrimage; its route was also to lead through Bystrá. In the announced edition, around 100 participants were to travel in small groups with headlamps or other lights along paths and road edges in Bystrá, while observing the traffic regulations.
