Holiday apartment in Horná Lehota: Hrádok and the Low Tatras

Horná Lehota lies at an altitude of 640 metres below the Ďumbier ridge in the Low Tatras mountain range. Its location already combines a clearly defined connection to the mountains with a diverse local history. The cadastral area of Horná Lehota also includes the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 protected area.

Landscape and nature

Coniferous forest habitats dominate the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 area, complemented by meadows and pastures. The protected natural area therefore explicitly extends into the cadastral area of Horná Lehota. Here, landscape features and cultural heritage are not separate from one another but appear together in the surroundings of the village.

Culture and history

Hrádok, a hilltop fortification protected on three sides by ramparts and on its north-western side by a rocky cliff, lies near Horná Lehota. Hrádok in Horná Lehota is a protected cultural monument. The site served as a settlement and trading centre and was part of the system of hilltop castles in Horehronie.

The writer and pastor Samo Chalupka is closely associated with Horná Lehota: he was born here and worked there as an Evangelical pastor from 1840 until his death. The Samo Chalupka Memorial Room contains ethnographic material about the lives of the inhabitants of Horná Lehota and its surroundings, as well as materials on the life and work of Samo Chalupka. It is housed in a former Evangelical school building. Advance registration by telephone is required for visits; the minimum group size is five people.

The religious buildings include the Roman Catholic Church of St Michael the Archangel in Horná Lehota. It is a Baroque church from the second half of the 17th century and is considered a national cultural monument. The Evangelical church of Horná Lehota, by contrast, is a Neoclassical building dating from 1845 that was restored after a fire in 1872. The bell tower of Horná Lehota has a wooden superstructure dating from 1789.

Trails and experiences

An educational trail leads from Horná Lehota to Hrádok. The “Kelti na Horehroní” educational trail is approximately 3.5 kilometres long and can begin at the “Kelti na Horehroní” exhibition in the centre of Horná Lehota. In this way, the starting point in the village, the exhibition theme and the destination, Hrádok, form part of one specifically named route.

Another route is intended for cycling: the cycling route to Vajskovský Waterfall begins in Horná Lehota and follows a moderate ascent along an asphalt road to the source of Samo Chalupka. More unusual forms of cultural interpretation also have their place. The “Prdimuch” escape room presents the local vampire legend in a cinema room through an audiovisual display.

The “Upírska noc” event takes place in Horná Lehota in summer. An edition called “Upírska svetlá noc” has been announced for 1 August 2026. Thus, the locally named range extends from historic buildings and memorial rooms to an educational trail, a cycling route and an audiovisual interpretation of local traditions.
