Cierny Balog combines impressive forest culture with educational trails, viewpoints and places steeped in tradition. A defining attraction is the Lesnícky skanzen, an open-air museum dedicated to forestry throughout Slovakia in the Vydrovská dolina near Čierny Balog. Between forest history, regional traditions and nature-oriented paths, the town offers a diverse picture that places cultural discoveries and active pursuits side by side.

Culture

The Čiernohronská úzkokol. lesná železnica in Čierny Balog includes, among other things, a station building and a narrow-gauge railway track, which are registered as national cultural monuments. The parish church in Čierny Balog is also part of the townscape: it is dedicated to the Nanebovzatiu Panny Márie and was built from 1797 to 1804.

The Lesnícky skanzen includes a replica of a forest chapel and a Symbolický lesnícky cintorín. These elements complement the open-air museum's forestry focus with independent places of remembrance and worship. The Fašiangový festival “Už sa fašiang kráti...” took place in 2026 in its 29th edition, from 13 to 17 February.

Nature

The Chodník lesného času in the Lesnícky skanzen is an educational trail just under five kilometres long with 88 stations. It explores the secrets of the forest, the history of forestry and the work of foresters. This means that, within a compact area, the trail focuses both on natural interrelationships and on human work in the forest.

The Dobročský prales National Nature Reserve is located within the municipality of Čierny Balog, six kilometres south of the settlement Dobroč, at the end of the Brôtovo valley in the Pod Geraukou area. Above the districts of Komov and Pusté in Čierny Balog stands the wooden rozhľadňa Pustý vrch observation tower. It is eleven metres high and has two viewing platforms at heights of three and six metres, offering views of Čierny Balog and the surrounding nature.

The rozhľadňa Urbanov klobúk observation tower offers views of the Low Tatras, the Veporské vrchy and Poľana. In addition to views of the immediate surroundings, it also opens up vistas of several distinctive mountain landscapes.

Activities

The Náučný chodník históriou a tradíciami obce Čierny Balog begins at the municipal office and leads directly to the Lesnícky skanzen in the Vydrovská dolina. On the way to the open-air museum, it offers a soft-surface, nature-oriented alternative to the paved main road. The route thus connects the starting point in the town with the destination in the Vydrovská dolina.

At Ski Čierny Balog, the mini-farm allows visitors to pet and feed sheep and goats. During the summer season, Ski Čierny Balog also offers hiking and mountain biking. The two offerings represent different ways of spending time outdoors.

For the summer season, the Čiernohronská železnica has designated the Čierny Balog – Vydrovská dolina (Lesnícky skanzen) route. The Čierny Balog – Dobroč route via the football pitch is also designated. The latter route offers insights into the local fauna and flora; there is also a raised hunting blind there.
