Nature and Trails

The Stožky Educational Trail begins in the municipality of Závadka nad Hronom. It is 13.5 km long, takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, and has an elevation difference of 150 m. The educational trail is intended for pedestrians. Závadka nad Hronom is also a starting point for marked hiking trails.

Veľká Stožka, a 260-hectare national nature reserve with rock towers, overhangs, caves, gorges and paleontological sites, is located along the Stožky Educational Trail. Malá Stožka on the Stožky Educational Trail is also a national nature reserve. It is home to calciphilous rock communities on dolomitic limestone, as well as rare plant and animal species.

Culture

The late Baroque Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Závadka nad Hronom is a cultural monument dating from 1784 and was renovated in 1932. Its main altar contains a painting by Andrej Zallinger created in 1786. The entrance slope of the church is decorated with an alpine garden featuring a pond, as well as rare plants and woody plants.

The municipal museum is housed in a traditional wooden building dating from 1921. It presents the local domestic culture of Závadka nad Hronom from the period before the Second World War, around the 1930s. The municipal museum building and its garden are designated as a national cultural monument.

The village’s historic architecture is also part of this cultural heritage. From the end of the 18th century and throughout the entire 19th century, typical homes in Závadka nad Hronom were two-room or three-room log houses with gabled roofs covered with shingles.

Local Life

The local folklore group Závačan contributes to preserving the municipality’s traditional folk customs. In February, a costumed carnival procession goes from house to house in Závadka nad Hronom, wishing people a good harvest. The municipality has also revived and organizes the Katarínsky jarmok tradition.

Opekance with bryndza or poppy seeds are still considered a traditional local dish in Závadka nad Hronom today. Alongside the built heritage, a traditional dish passed down through generations is therefore also at the heart of local life.
