Valaská brings together several clearly distinguishable attractions: the history of iron processing in Piesok and at the Hutnícky skanzen, St. Martin’s Church, Bystrianska Cave and the Horné Lazy observation tower. This picture is complemented by cycling connections linking Valaská with Brezno and other surrounding places. Historical traces, underground nature and routes through the landscape thus meet in and near the village.

Culture and history

In Piesok, by the Bystrianka stream, a hammer mill with four hearths and two tilt hammers was built in 1789. A well-preserved ensemble of large factory buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries has also survived there. These include a cylindrical water tower and a heavy machinery hall, both with decorative brick façades. The industrial past is therefore reflected not only in a single building but in several preserved parts of the former factory complex.

Another historic landmark is St. Martin’s Church in Valaská. It was originally built as a Gothic church in the second half of the 15th century. It was remodelled from 1612 to 1615 and again in the 19th century; among other changes, the sacristy, tower and vaults were altered. The church is listed in the Central List of the Slovak Monument Fund under number 86/0.

The Hutnícky skanzen is located at the limestone rock Skalka na Závoze near Valaská and refers to the regionally significant history of mining and iron smelting. Its grounds include underground iron-ore mines, a Celtic ironworks from the 1st century, a water-powered Renaissance ironworks, a chapel, a smithy, an observation tower and ore-transport facilities. The skanzen also offers an approximately one-hour excursion featuring an audiovisual presentation about dying crafts, a visit to an old iron-ore mine and a charcoal-burner’s workshop where charcoal is produced.

Nature

Bystrianska Cave lies on the northern edge of Valaská’s cadastral territory, directly below the southern edge of the municipality of Bystrá and between Podbrezová and Mýto pod Ďumbierom. It is an accessible national natural monument site. The visitor route through the cave is 580 metres long and takes 45 minutes. It is known for remarkable rock formations, the development of its underground spaces and the presence of sinter coatings.

Hiking and cycling

Hiking trails to the Horné Lazy observation tower begin in the villages of Valaská, Bystrá and Mýto pod Ďumbierom in the Pohanské area. The tower can be reached via an interactive educational trail with information about the surrounding nature. Wooden sculptures of forest animals stand along the route; a large wooden megaphone makes the sounds of the forest audible.

The cycling network also connects Valaská with other municipalities. On 8 June 2026, a new cycling bridge between Brezno and Valaská was opened to the public. It forms part of a cycling route connecting the two municipalities. The Zákľuky cycling route via Čierny Balog and Sihla enters Valaská via Chvatimech.

The Chvatimech chairlift is located in the vicinity of Valaská. It is a technical monument and the first chairlift manufactured in Slovakia, dating from the 1950s. The chairlift belongs to the municipality of Valaská, but is located in the cadastral territory of Hronec on private land.
