The Low Tatras National Park forms part of the protected-area context of Braväcovo. At 1,544 metres, Beňuška is the highest peak in the cadastral territory of Braväcovo.

History and Townscape

Towards the end of the 16th century, Braväcovo existed as a chamber timber-cutters' settlement. According to tradition, Braväcovo and the settlements of Podholie and Srnkovo were founded in the 16th century by German miners and Polish charcoal burners. The preserved townscape includes numerous old wooden houses, many of which are used as holiday homes. The Schweintaal guesthouse was built in 2007 in the traditional style of Slovak folk architecture.

Culture in the Village

The small amphitheatre in Braväcovo was ceremonially opened on 28 August 1999 and is used for cultural events organised by the municipality and its residents. The BKZ Bukovinka association is also dedicated to developing and spreading traditional folk culture in Braväcovo and the surrounding region. The Na Bielych Handľoch folklore festival, held in Braväcovo every year in July, provides an enduring link to this cultural environment. The festival also includes a market for folk products and traditional handicrafts.

Trails and Winter Sports

A green-marked hiking trail leads through Braväcovo to Beňuška, which is also popularly known as Käčka and, at 1,544 metres, is the highest peak in the cadastral territory of Braväcovo. A cross-country skiing route connects Braväcovo with the Čertovica mountain pass and runs along the southern slope of Beňuška. Among the cross-country ski trails at Čertovica, this route has the greatest difference in elevation. The hiking ascent of Bukovinská skala is called “Bukovinka na Bukovinke”.

There is a bus connection from Braväcovo to Brezno; train and bus connections are available in Beňuš.
