Moštenica lies on the southern slopes of the western part of the Low Tatras and is a starting point for reaching the ridge of the Low Tatras. The character of the village is shaped by its largely forested municipal area, the Moštenická kyslá mineral spring and the protected travertines.

Landscape and Nature

The Moštenické travertíny natural monument lies in the cadastral area of Moštenica and within the protection zone of a national park. Near Moštenické travertíny, an active travertine terrace with five water outlets is protected. The travertine complex forms an approximately 500-metre-long cascade with six levels and lies at elevations between 650 and 800 metres. Most of the municipal area of Moštenica is forested.

The Moštenické travertíny area is used for recreation, but it is accessible neither via a marked hiking trail nor an educational trail. Thus, the protected natural formation, its water outlets and the precise structure of the cascade are just as much a part of the village landscape as the surrounding woodland.

Trails and Recreation

A recreation centre developed around the Moštenická kyslá mineral spring. A hiking trail from Moštenica via the Uhliarska Valley, Moštenická Kyslá, Zubová, Hadlanka and Kozí chrbát to Hiadeľské sedlo takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. The named stations connect the starting point of Moštenica with a clearly described route through the area to Hiadeľské sedlo.

Traditional home production is also part of the village’s history: in Moštenica, it included woodworking and linen weaving. Alongside the forested landscape and travertines, traditional forms of home handicraft therefore represent the various facets of the village.

Culture and History

The cemetery in Moštenica contains the graves of fallen partisans. A monument to murdered Hungarian soldiers and a civilian victim stands by the former lime kiln in Moštenica. Both sites preserve specific memories connected with Moštenica and its past.

At the Hradište hilltop settlement, traces date back to the Early and Late Bronze Age. Hradište was probably fortified by an existing ditch. A cremation burial of the Lusatian culture was also found near Hradište. The settlement and the find are therefore among the archaeological evidence preserved in and around Moštenica.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Moštenica is a Neoclassical church built in 1846–1847. Its high altar features a Crucifixion painting created by J. B. Klemens in 1846. The church is considered well preserved and continues to serve its religious purpose.

The former mining office in Moštenica is a Renaissance building with a U-shaped floor plan, erected in 1561. It is remembered as the site of a military hospital during the Slovak National Uprising. The former building thus combines its Renaissance form with a later historical function.
