East of Môlča lies a 2 km² karst island. This striking landscape feature marks the beginning of a place where natural formations, mining history, historic local features and varied paths come together.

Nature

Môlča lies in the northern part of the Zvolenská vrchovina upland, in the valley of the Môlčiansky potok stream with its tributary Malá Môlča. In this landscape, Mariana Cave is located in the Môlčianska Valley opposite the turn-off to Malá Môlča. Mariana is a short cave with three branches. Its entrance is on the left below a rock face in an abandoned quarry.

Another distinctive name is Na Drienku (Starý Drienok). This is an old mining structure that partly transitions into karst formations. The associated system is approximately 2 km long. Orientation is difficult, there is water in the system, and the entire mining system is unstable.

History and culture

The history of Môlča dates back to around 1300: the village was founded on the territory of Comes Miku, the son of Radun. The first written reference dates from 1424; at that time, Môlča was called Mocha.

Historic cellars are located in the village centre. The village also features the Môlča village bell tower, a masonry structure with a square floor plan and a pyramidal roof. A memorial plaque commemorating the victims of the First World War is attached to the building. Thus, architectural details and memories from different eras stand side by side in the centre.

Getting around

For cyclists, cycling route No. 2 leads from Banská Bystrica via Môlča and Horná Mičiná to Vlkanová and back to Banská Bystrica. Another route begins at the junction outside Šalková, follows the road to Môlča and continues from the village centre towards Horná Mičiná.
