Culture and history

The folk architecture monument reserve in Špania Dolina consists of a unique ensemble of miners’ houses made of wood and stone. Another historical layer is represented by the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord: it was consecrated in 1254 and transformed from an older Romanesque building into a Gothic one in 1593.

A guided tour of the Múzeum medi lasting approximately 1.5 to 2 hours is available and must be arranged in advance. The fortified church can be reached via a covered staircase with 160 steps. In addition, the small private Múzeum čipkovania introduces visitors to the unique bobbin lace of Špania Dolina.
