In the mountain world of the Great Fatra, Krížna is the focal point near Turecká. At 1,574 metres, it is the third-highest peak of the Great Fatra. Its distinctive, treeless massif offers extensive panoramic views.

Nature

The traces of earlier mountain use are also part of the landscape of Krížna. There were four sheepfolds on its bare massif. The Velká Fatra educational trail begins at a car park in Turecká, follows a yellow-marked trail to the starting point near Pod Líškou and ends at Chata pod Borišovom. Along the way, nine stations explain the varied relief modelling in rocks of the Choč and Krížna nappes.

Hiking and trails

For hikers, the options range from a focused summit hike to short outings, longer hikes and multi-day tours. The ascent from Saľaška in Turecká to Krížna is listed as 4.2 kilometres, with a duration of 2:38 hours and 787 metres of elevation gain. Three red-marked hiking trails meet at the summit. A classic circular route from Turecká via Kráľova studňa is approximately 18.5 kilometres long and has 1,100 metres of elevation gain.

In Turecká and its surroundings, there are opportunities for mountain hiking and sports, as well as numerous marked and unmarked trails. Around Turecká, mountain bike routes connect the valleys with more distant destinations such as Kráľova Studňa. Short outings, longer hikes and multi-day tours are also described. This shows the range of trails across different time frames, without all routes having the same character.

Winter

Turecká is one of the most popular ski areas in the Great Fatra. At the same time, the SKI Turecká ski area is not in operation. The area can be accessed via hiking trails, the Turecká–Líška ski run and from Suchá dolina over the ridge of Dlhý Grúň. The period from 1 November to 31 March is specified for ski mountaineering.

The historical information about the ski area refers to 2014: At that time, SKI Turecká had three lifts and 1.3 kilometres of ski runs. Cross-country skiing, sledding and alpine skiing were listed as seasonal sports for the same year. Thus, the equipment documented in the past and the winter sports mentioned coexist with the current status that SKI Turecká is not in operation.

Culture and food

At the beginning of summer, Slovak and European championships in cooking and eating bryndzové halušky take place in Turecká. The programme includes demonstrations of traditional handicrafts and the sale of traditional products. At the Halušky Festival in Turecká on 24 and 25 July 2026, there was a competition, handicrafts, entertainment, halušky for visitors, refreshments and a cultural programme.

Another special feature is the Krňačky races. They are connected with former Carnival customs and use traditional sledges built without nails or screws. The tradition of the Krňačky races in Turecká has existed since 1957.

Getting there

The main road connection to Turecká leads from Banská Bystrica towards Donovaly and Ružomberok; in Staré Hory, turn off towards Turecká. A bus connection on the Banská Bystrica–Špania Dolina–Dolný Harmanec–Staré Hory–Turecká corridor is also listed.
