Horné Pršany: Kremenia Natural Monument and Educational Trails

Horné Pršany is home to Kremenia, a protected natural monument of geological and geomorphological significance. Kremenia is important because of its diverse surface formations and outcrops, where processes of silicification can be observed.

Nature

The Kremenia area features distinctive, clearly protruding rock ridges. Rock cliffs frequently form along their edges, and there are also occasional smaller rock towers. The interesting relief forms are associated with the transformation of the original limestone and dolomite rocks into siliceous rock.

The “Horné Pršany – Rozhľadňa” educational trail ends below the summit of Lažtek Hill in the Kopanice locality. An observation tower stands there, offering views of the surrounding area. The “Horné Pršany – Kremenia” educational trail ends at the Kremenia natural monument, which contains interesting caves.

Educational Trails and Paths

The “Horné Pršany – Rozhľadňa” educational trail has four stations providing information about the municipality’s historical and natural features and its surroundings. At four stations, the “Horné Pršany – Kremenia” educational trail provides information about the history of the municipality of Horné Pršany and its sights.

The “Horné Pršany – Rozhľadňa” educational trail also covers tourism opportunities in this part of the Kremnica Mountains. From the bus stop in Horné Pršany, marked tourist signs lead to the Kremenia Cave; the walk from the municipality takes about 20 minutes.

As a terminus municipality, Horné Pršany can be reached by bus from the Radvaň-Kráľová district of Banská Bystrica via Pršianska terasa.

Winter and Cycling

Marked hiking trails from Horné Pršany lead to various destinations in the Kremnica Mountains, including Tri kríže and Králiky and, where applicable, as far as Kremnica. In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails run along Horné Pršany’s marked network of hiking paths.

The “Trasa L – Králiky – Horné Pršany” cross-country ski route ends above Horné Pršany. A connecting cycle route links Malachov and Horné Pršany.

History and Folk Traditions

The bell tower in Horné Pršany is one of the municipality’s historic structures. The bell tower contains a late Baroque bell dating from 1757 by an unknown maker; it is a cultural monument.

A settlement of the Lusatian Urnfield culture was discovered in the Hrádok locality. From Horné Pršany, a field road leads past the sheepfold to the Medzihrádky (Hrádok) locality, where archaeological research was carried out in the past.

It is recorded that Fašiangy began around midday on Sunday with five male participants in traditional dress. At Fašiangy in Horné Pršany, the song “Šikovný čardáš,” which has no lyrics, was played; according to tradition, it was played nowhere else in Slovakia. According to this traditional sequence of events, Fašiangy ended at midnight on Tuesday with the burial of the double bass.
