Horná Mičiná lies in the valley of the Mičinský Stream in the Bystrická vrchovina area. The surroundings have a hilly to mountainous character. Church architecture, commemorative culture, craft traditions and marked trails shape different facets of the village.

Landscape and nature

At 704 m, Kozlinec is the highest peak in the Horná Mičiná area. Kozlinec is also home to a protected occurrence of downy oak covering an area of 25.62 ha. Near the neighbouring municipality of Dolná Mičiná are the Mičinské travertíny, a natural formation placed under protection in 1979, with a 4.6 ha system of mineral-water springs. The surroundings thus combine a hilly to mountainous character, protected vegetation and mineral springs.

Culture and history

The evangelical church in Horná Mičiná was built in 1784–1785 as a Classicist toleration church and remodelled in 1905. Its furnishings include a Rococo altar with a pulpit, a Louisa or Louis-seize baptismal font from the end of the 18th century and an organ in a wooden gallery. The church is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. A memorial plaque to Ján Chalupka is located on the local evangelical vicarage.

Horná Mičiná is the birthplace of the dramatist and writer Ján Chalupka, the author of Kocúrkovo. A different historical period is represented by the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Horná Mičiná: it is an Early Gothic single-nave church from the second half of the 13th century, later remodelled in the Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. Its altar was created in 1700 by an unknown sculpting and carving workshop from the central Slovak region and by an unknown painter who probably also came from this area.

Local tradition included a rich tradition of weaving and embroidery with a crooked needle. A Detva-type folk costume was also part of this tradition. Today, this costume is used only rarely, while weaving and embroidery belong to the past. The surviving forms thus represent a field of craftsmanship that is preserved mainly for its historical value today.

Trails and events

A yellow-marked hiking trail no. 8453 leads from Vlkanová via Mičinské lúky to Horná Mičiná. The cultural calendar includes the family-friendly theatre and music festival Mičinský pitvor, which was held for the ninth time in 2024. The weekend programme on 22 and 23 June took place in Horná Mičiná.
