In the vicinity of Hiadeľ, the Hiadeľská Kyslá spring emerges at two locations. Also nearby, on the summit of Hradište, is the Moštenické hillfort. Based on the ceramics recovered during the investigation of the site and its surroundings, its origins have been dated to the Late Bronze Age.

Culture and History

The Chapel of Saint Francis in Hiadeľ is a late Classicist chapel built between 1847 and 1856. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. A memorial plaque on a school building in Hiadeľ commemorates the fact that, during the Slovak National Uprising, it temporarily housed the partisan headquarters of A. S. Yegorov and a military field hospital.

The DHZ Hiadeľ Memorial Room displays numerous awards, winner’s trophies, medals and diplomas, as well as firefighting protective clothing with a helmet and breathing apparatus. The traditional folk costume of Hiadeľ also belongs to the central Slovak variant of the Detva–Podkonice type. In Hiadeľ, houses no. 104 and 110 are currently protected buildings. Every year on 24 March and 29 August, the local organisation of the Slovak Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters organises wreath-laying ceremonies at two memorial sites in Hiadeľ and its vicinity.

Customs and Events

Among the Pentecost customs preserved in Hiadeľ is the erection of maypoles in front of the houses; a decorated tree is also erected in the village square. During Carnival in Hiadeľ, masked members of the volunteer fire brigade and other volunteers, accompanied by an accordion player, walk through the village singing; in the evening, a community disco follows.

The annual Hody na sv. Františka celebration in Hiadeľ takes place on the Sunday closest to 4 October; a communal agape follows Holy Mass. International Firefighters’ Day is celebrated in Hiadeľ every year on 4 May with a programme specially aimed at children and a firefighting competition involving teams from the surrounding municipalities.

The Midsummer bonfire in Hiadeľ takes place on the weekend after Saint John’s Day; people gather around a large fire and celebrate the beginning of summer. Saint Nicholas Day with a Christmas market takes place at the community centre at the beginning of December and includes activities for children, such as decorating gingerbread and making Christmas decorations. At the Saint Nicholas Day Christmas market in Hiadeľ, homemade products such as scented candles, Christmas wreaths, Christmas decorations and wooden products are offered, along with festive refreshments such as gingerbread, sweets, and alcoholic or non-alcoholic punch.

Culinary Specialities

Krumplovník is a traditional dish made from potatoes and flour that has been prepared in Hiadeľ since the time of people’s great-grandparents. At the Hiadlovský Krumplovník community festival in the second half of September, Krumplovník is baked and can be tasted.
