Dolný Harmanec brings together unusual aspects of the Slovak landscape and history. Here you will encounter an underground world with distinctive formations, a nature reserve, the part of the national park belonging to Veľká Fatra, as well as technical monuments from the region’s transport and forestry history. Hikes to Kráľova studňa also start here.

Nature

Harmanecká Cave reveals a varied underground world. Its formations include white moonmilk, imposing pagoda stalagmites, wall-like sinter waterfalls and sinter curtains. Eleven bat species have also been recorded in the cave. The entrance route follows a 1,420-metre-long switchback path with an ascent of 260 metres. Inside, the visitor route is 1,020 metres long and takes approximately 60 minutes.

Distinctive natural features can also be found above ground. The Harmanecká tisina National Nature Reserve in Dolný Harmanec protects more than 1,000 yew trees. The oldest trees are up to 400 years old. The northern part of Dolný Harmanec, which belongs to Veľká Fatra, forms part of Veľká Fatra National Park. Thus, the cave, ancient trees and protected mountain landscape are all found within the same local setting.
